Phil Lothair Peterson

October 3, 1935 – December 18, 2020 (85)

Our beloved Husband, Father, and Grandpa passed away peacefully on December 18, 2020. Phil was born October 3, 1935 in Ogden to Philo and Grace Peterson and was the oldest of ten Children. He graduated from Ogden High School and worked as a livestock buyer for Swift and Ogden Dress Meats and he retired from Consolidated Freightways in October of 1997.

He married Jeanette Hammer on October 7, 1954 in the Salt Lake City Temple. They had five children together and resided in Washington Terrace and Roy. He was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in many callings and his most rewarding calling was Bishop of the Washington Terrace 6th Ward. He was a perfect example of service and Christ-like love, always putting other peoples needs before his own.

He loved a party whether it be with family, friends or ward members. Everyone loved coming to Uncle Phil’s house and eat his Slumgully. December was a special month for him when he would put on his bright red suit and bring smiles to children and adults all season long. He loved to just stop by neighbor’s homes unannounced or walk through Walmart in that special suit. He enjoyed his time with animals, he raised cattle dogs for work and everything from horses to rabbits at home. He enjoyed many activities outdoors such as gardening and mowing his lawn and hunting and camping in his younger years. He also had a love for fast pitch softball. He was well known for his pitching and won many championships with his team sponsored by the Rainbow Bar. He also enjoyed golfing and was known for his self-made golf course which included a tee box, water hazard, and sand trap. The Ogden Standard Examiner wrote an article about his field of dreams years ago.

He and Jeannette divorced in 1993 and he married Lynda Merkley on December 30, 1995 and settled in Syracuse. They went on to have many adventures together traveling. They shared a love for their dogs, shopping, and golfing together.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Maureen and Lynette, and sisters-in-laws Joann and Kaye. He is survived by his wife Lynda, his children Bruce (Julie) Peterson, Carrie (Dan) Bianchi, Mark (Kim) Peterson, DeAnn (Clair) Widdison, Nate (Julie) Peterson and his siblings Glenn, Ralph, Paul, Ellie, Carol, Lana and Diane.

The family would like to thank Legacy House of Ogden and Inspiration Hospice for all their loving care to our Dad. They would also like to thank friends and neighbors for their outpour of love they gave our Dad/Grandpa.

A viewing and graveside service for his immediate family was held in his honor.
