April 15, 1936 ~ April 4, 2017

Philip Hudson Smith, 80, passed away peacefully on April 4, 2017 in West Point, UT.

He was born on April 15, 1936 in Santa Barbara, CA to William Leland and Julia Beeson Smith, pioneers in the Santa Maria Valley.  Phil, or ‘Bud’ as he was affectionately known, and his sister, Joann, spent most of their lives in Santa Maria. Phil grew up fishing with his dad and loved San Luis Obispo and Avila beach where the fishing was amazing.

After two years in the Navy traveling through much of Europe, he concluded his schooling at Whittier College where he met and married Casella W. Carlisle. They had three children, Philip Tyler, Wendy, and Jennifer. The family lived in Ohio and Pennsylvania. After 13 years, they divorced and Phil moved back to his beloved Santa Maria and his supportive family.  Phil loved people and worked as a manager at the Gottshalks and DenMat in Santa Maria. He was also a real estate agent for Keller Williams.

This year would mark 50 years of membership at the Elks Club in Santa Maria. He was active in the Lodge and loved cooking meals, grilling Santa Maria Tri-tip and participating in many charity events and rodeos.

In October 2013, at the age of 75, Phil was baptized a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He enjoyed his new membership in Santa Maria and became friends with many. Sensing his health was declining, he decided to move to Utah with a daughter. Phil adapted easily to this new experience mostly because of his friendly, patient demeanor. He quickly felt included with the locals at church and the senior center. He developed strong friendships with many wonderful people.

He is survived by his son, Tyler (Anna) Smith, Ashtabula, OH; daughters Wendy (Greg) McClure, Ashtabula, OH and Jennifer (Daniel) Doxey, West Point, UT; and eleven grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Joann Wilson, and three nephews, Bill Wilson, Mike Wilson, and Dr. Doug Wilson, all of Santa Maria.
