Preston James Atkinson, born January 21, 1947, in Ogden, Utah, passed away peacefully at home on July 18, 2024, due to complications related to Parkinson's disease. He was a beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend who touched many lives with his kindness and dedication.
Preston was the youngest son of Grant Phillip Atkinson and June Elizabeth Phillips. He grew up in Layton, Utah, alongside his older brother, Grant “Jeep”. A proud alumnus of Davis High School, he furthered his education at Weber State University, where he laid the foundation for a successful career at Unisys and Intel.
On June 3, 1967, Preston married Nancy Lee Cooper in Clearfield, Utah. Although they later divorced, they maintained a close loving relationship. Their union was blessed with two wonderful sons, Destry and Morgan, whom they raised in Kaysville, Utah. Preston’s greatest pride and joy were his children and grandchildren. Despite a demanding job with Intel that took him to Beaverton, Oregon, he always made it a priority to return to Utah frequently to remain a constant presence in his family’s life.
After retiring, Preston returned to Davis County, a place he held dear, where he shared his life with his dedicated, loving companion, Cheryl Hall.
Preston had a deep passion for sports, especially U of U Football and Basketball, but his true love was golf. An avid golfer, he spent countless hours on the course, not only playing the game he loved but also nurturing lifelong friendships that began on the greens. His friends, both from childhood and those he met later in life, were an essential part of his happiness.
Preston’s other great loves included indulging in popsicles, snow cones, ice cream cakes, and a big tub of movie popcorn. He adored the outdoors and took immense pride in maintaining the greenest, most manicured lawn on the block.
Preston leaves behind a legacy of love, friendship, and cherished memories. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
We offer a special thanks to Kaleb Aycock, Rhonda Jones and Robin Clemens for the exceptional care they provided to Preston in his final months.
Graveside services will be held for close friends and family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Parkinson’s Foundation in Preston’s memory.
