Our dear Husband, Dad, Grandpa and Great-grandpa, R.L. Ponder, 79, died peacefully Friday, September 24, 2010 at 12:35 a.m. at Promise Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah.

He was born April 11, 1931 in Calhoun, Georgia, the son of John William Thomas Ponder and Roxie Childers Ponder. He attended Marietta High School and received his GED while serving in the U.S. military.

R.L. proudly served his country for 20 years active duty in the U.S. Air Force and he was veteran of the Vietnam War.

On May 28, 1954, R.L. married Darlene Shope in Marietta, Georgia. They were happily married for 56 years and from this union had four beautiful children.

He worked as a telephone installer and repair technician. He also worked in welding and metal processing. Following his retirement from the U.S. Air Force, he worked in supply at Hill Air Force Base as a civilian for 20 years.

R.L. loved working crossword puzzles and he was very good at it. He spent hours on the internet looking up information concerning family and old working buddies. His very special friend was his cat, Muffin.

He is survived by his loving wife, Darlene, Roy; their children, Tim (Lucy) Ponder, Ogden; Pamella (Mark) Jacobson, Kearns; Randy Ponder, Ogden; Penny Ponder, CO; 5 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren; a brother, Claude, and a sister, Elsie, both of Hiram, GA. He is also survived by a nephew, Tony Ponder and niece, Gail Lightfoot Williams.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Gene and Thomas.

Father, Pops, Dad and Grandpa, we will miss you and remember your love, smiles and jokes. You will be in our thoughts always.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, September 29th at 2 p.m. at Lindquist''s Layton Mortuary, 1867 N. Fairfield Road.

The family will visit with friends on Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Wednesday from 12:45 to 1:45 p.m. at the mortuary.

Interment, Lindquist''s Memorial Park at Layton.
