Alan Rand Matthews

1947 ~ 2018

LAYTON – Alan Rand Matthews passed away on June 22, 2018  after a long battle with cancer.  He was born on September 13, 1947, to Helen Douglas and Raymond Matthews in Salt Lake City, Utah.  His family then moved back to Corpus Christi, Texas, where he grew up and finished most of his education.  When he was a senior in college, he moved back to Utah to finish his education at Weber State and met Marilyn Smith, the love of his life.  They were married on December 14, 1970, in the Logan Temple.  They lived in Ogden and Brigham City, but spent the last 34 years living in Layton, Utah.

He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and had a powerful testimony of his Savior, Jesus Christ.  He was always willing to share his testimony with others and loved to talk about the gospel and its teachings.  He held several church callings including five wonderful years as Bishop of the Layton 30th Ward, First Counselor in the Brigham City 20th Ward, Gospel Doctrine Teacher, High Priest Group Leader, High Councilor, Ward Missionary, Stake Missionary, Stake Mission President and Home Teacher.

He worked at Weber Basin Job Corps for two years, but his career made a turn when he started working at the Bank of Utah.  He ended a 40 year career there in December 2012.  He served on several committees for the Utah Bankers Association and also served on the United Way Board for 18 years, receiving the Volunteer of the Year Award in 2017.

He was blessed to have an extended four and half years on this earth after he was diagnosed with stage four cancer and was able to finish several items on his bucket list.  He took one more cruise to Alaska, visited the Giant Redwoods in California, had some wonderful Family Retreats with his children and grandchildren, caught and released his “biggest ever” last brown trout, compiled a cookbook of his favorite recipes, spent many wonderful days in his RV and even got to fly an airplane.

There were many things he enjoyed in his life – one was cooking.  He spent many hours in the kitchen and prepared dinner for Marilyn every night.  He also enjoyed sharing his talent with family and friends when he smoked a brisket or barbequed some ribs.  He also loved fly fishing and loved going fishing with his sons and with his “fishing buddies” who became his lifelong friends.  He also had a passion for Yellowstone Park and he and Marilyn loved taking the RV into the park every summer to fish and see the beauties of nature, but he especially enjoyed spending time with his family and looked forward to the family retreats we had the last four years.  His family meant everything to him and the grandkids are going to miss their “Grampy.”

He is survived by his wife, Marilyn, children; Brian (Elaina), Michelle, Brent (Emily), and Brad, his sister, Sandy (Charlie) Solomon and five grandchildren; Alyssa, Tayvin, Olivia, Sophie and Owen.  He was preceded in death by his mother and father.

The family would like to acknowledge and thank Dr. Brian Heaton, Dr. Joel Porter and Dr. Gary Whipple and their wonderful staff members for the excellent care they have given Rand over the past several years.
