Hazen Randall Hillyard

Hazen Randall Hillyard, 96, of Ogden, passed away in Bountiful on Monday, January 5, 2015.

He was born on November 24, 1918, in Smithfield, Utah, to William Hazen and Ruby Nilson Hillyard. He graduated from North Cache High School and received a degree in Business from Utah State Agricultural College.

He served his country in World War II from 1942–1945 as a first lieutenant in Field Artillery, where he was awarded a Bronze Star, an Air Medal, and three battle stars.

On September 6, 1945, he married Gene Funk of Richmond, Utah in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They raised four children. In 1954 they moved from Logan to Ogden, where he worked for the Home Abstract and Title Company. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary shortly before Gene died in 1995.

He served in the LDS New England Mission from 1939–1941. He is remembered and loved by many for his lifelong service in many positions in the LDS Church, including as bishop of the Ogden 73rd Ward from 1972–1977.

Survivors include his four children: Mary and John Kay Jorgenson, Wasilla, Alaska; Dr. David R. and Eve M. Hillyard, Salt Lake City; Richard L. Hillyard, Orem; and Margaret Ann and David W. Lazenby, Belmont, Mass.; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one brother: Ferris E. and Faye Hillyard, Salt Lake City; and two sisters: Marva Egbert, Bountiful; Eunice Davis, Salt Lake City.

He was preceded in death by his wife and by a sister, Evelyn Hansen.

The family gives heartfelt thanks to all who have cared for our father in his final years, including the awesome staff of Waikoloa Assisted Living in Bountiful and the nurses and staff of First Choice Home Health & Hospice.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, January 8, at 11 a.m. at the Kingston Ward Chapel, 1425 Kingston Drive (36th and Polk), Ogden, with Bishop Russ Lawrence conducting. Friends may call Wednesday evening at Lindquist's Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd., from 6–8 p.m. and at the chapel on Thursday from 9:30–10:30 a.m.

Interment will be in the Smithfield, Utah City Cemetery.
