Raphael Arruda was born July 23, 1989 in Joao Pessoa, Paraiba, Brazil to Sergio Arruda De Souza and the former Carmem Tercia Arruda.
Their family moved to the United States in 2001 and settled in Utah in 2002.
Raphael graduated from Bonneville High School in 2008 and enlisted in the Army Reserves that same year. He was assigned to the 744th Engineer Company as a Combat Engineer. He was deployed in 2010 to participate in Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. He was killed in action on Saturday, July 16, 2011.
He is survived by his mother Carmem Tercia (Thomas) Possche, his father Sergio (Jana) De Souza, brothers Sergio (Ydaiane) Arruda, Andrey Arruda, step siblings Tari and Jaren Alford; a grandmother, grandfather and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
Raphael enjoyed life and lived it to the fullest. He felt an obligation to serve and protect his adopted country and our freedom. He will always be our true hero and will be greatly missed.
Funeral services will be held Saturday July 30th at 11 a.m. at the South Ogden 6th Ward Chapel, 4380 Orchard Avenue.
The family will meet with friends on Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist''s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd. and Saturday from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. at the church.
Interment, Lindquist''s Washington Heights Memorial Park, 4500 Washington Blvd.
