Reid J Child

May 2, 1946 — August 24, 2024

Reid J Child, 78 (although if you asked him, it was always his anniversary of his 29th birthday), completed his mission on this earth and graduated to his next mission on August 24, 2024, surrounded by family in Syracuse, Utah. Reid was born in Ogden, Utah on May 2, 1946, to Mary Gibson and Roscoe Edward Child.

He was a dedicated disciple of Jesus Christ and loved to serve the Lord. At the age of 2, Reid showed his willpower and determination to defy odds. Reid survived a traumatic accident which many doctors believed he would not survive. This trial would define the man Reid would grow up to be.

He attended and graduated from Weber High in 1964, after which he attended Weber State College. He served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in the Northern States mission. He loved recounting his experiences to his kids, grandkids and great grandkids about his love for missionary work.

Once he returned from his mission, he met Juanita Stella Barton at Johnson A&W Root Beer Stand in Riverdale, Utah and it was love at first sight. They were married in the Salt Lake Temple on December 12, 1969. Together they had 7 children, 32 grandchildren, and 9 great grandchildren at the time of his passing.

Reid was known for his talkative personality and often came home with a pocket full of new pens from the bank. He loved using these pens to work on his word search with family members.

He worked for Hill Air Force Base as a machinist for 37 years along with other jobs to help support his family.

He served in many callings for the church and loved telling stories to everyone he met. He often met you with and enthusiastic “Hey” and would always tell you, “I sure love ya”. One of endearing qualities was answering a phone with a “love ya” instead of “hello”. His presence was a light to everyone who got to know him and will be dearly missed by many family members.

He is survived by his wife Juanita, 7 children: Shelly (Curtis) Myler, Curtis Reid (Heidi) Child, Tanya (Jason) Hipwell, Cammy (Mike) Black, Amanda (Steve) Hansen, Natalie (Steve) Thorne, Amy (Andrew) Scott, siblings, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and many friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents Mary Gibson and Roscoe Child, brother, Glenn Child, son-in-law Brent Martin, two granddaughters Aubrey Myler and Anna Thorne.

Funeral services will be held on Friday August 30, 2024, at 11 a.m. at the Syracuse 4th Ward, 1625 South 1100 West, Syracuse UT. Friends may visit with family on Thursday, August 29, 2024, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Lindquist’s Syracuse Mortuary and from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. prior to service at the church.

Interment will be at Syracuse City Cemetery.

The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to Holy Cross Davis Hospital, Utah North Rehabilitation Center, Fairfield Village and Atlas Homecare and Hospice for their dedicated service and care for Reid. We also would like to express special thanks to Dr. Daniel Humiston and Evan Law at Utah Cardiology.

In lieu of flowers, the family would like to extend the invitation to find a way to serve the missionaries by donating to the general mission fund, feed the missionaries, or serve others. Reid and Juanita enjoyed writing letters, donating to the missionary fund and have fed many missionaries throughout their marriage.
