Shirley Renee Colby Mikkelsen passed away December 9, 2020, from complications of Covid 19. Renee was preceded in death by her parents, husband Leo G. Mikkelsen, one son Kimm V (Brandon) Mikkelsen, and one brother Kenneth (Arlene) Colby.

Renee was born June 22, 1930, in Shelley, Idaho, to Isaac J. “Jack” Colby and Delia B. Madsen. She spent her childhood in Wilson Lane, West 21st Street, across from Wilson Elementary.

Renee met Leo G. Mikkelsen in early 1947. They were married on Memorial Day, May 30, 1947. Together they had four children, Terry L. and Peggy Mikkelsen, Susan R. and Pat Vogel, Kimm V. Mikkelsen (deceased) and Melanie D. Dabel. On January 29, 1959 they were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple for time and all eternity. They were married for 51 years.

While raising her family, Renee worked as a caregiver for the Snyder family and Whitney family. She was a soda jerk at Judy’s on 30th and Harrison. She went to work the Dr D. Olsson at the Ogden Clinic as an aide for 10 years. She went back to school and got her GED and Nursing Associates Degree from Weber State University. She graduated in June of 1970. She spent over 40 years as a nurse for Dr. Feeny, and McKay Dee Surgical Center. When she retired, she continued to volunteer at the Surgical Center, George E Wahlen Ogden Veterans and the Seniors in Plain City and North Ogden.

In 2002, Renee enjoyed volunteering at the Utah Winter Olympics.

Renee traveled to Denmark, Holland, Rome, Greece, Alaska, and the Hawaiian Islands. She and Leo were members of the ‘The Good Sam’s’ and traveled all over the Western United States. She served as secretary for many years.

Leo and Renee moved to Plain City in 1961. Leo passed away on December 10, 1998. Renee remained in their home until 2016. They were in the Plain City 1st Ward and finally in the 5th Ward. She served in many callings.

Renee loved to walk, morning and night with her neighbors. She crocheted many afghans for friends and family. She made the best candy of anyone around and gave it away freely. She did ceramics with her mother. But one of the most joyful things she did was to setup Christmas lights all over her yard. She loved Christmas time.

Renee is survived by three brothers, Darwin Colby, Grand Junction, CO; Melvey and Sherly Colby, Palm Springs, CA; and Ron Colby, Farr West, UT. She has 3 children (1 deceased), 8 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren (2 deceased), and 12.333 great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 19, 2020 at 2 p.m. at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd. Friends may visit with family on Saturday from 1 to 1:45 p.m. at the mortuary. Interment, Lindquist’s Memorial Gardens of the Wasatch, 1718 Combe Rd.
