Reva W. Brittain
NORTH OGDEN – Reva Brittain returned Home on Tuesday, April 6, 2010 while being cared for by family in her own residence. She grew up on farms in western Kansas. During her childhood and as a young woman, farm work was done using draft animals. Kids got to school either by walking or riding horses.
She lived through the Great Depression and worked her way through Fort Hayes Kansas St. College cleaning rooms and typing. The pay for cleaning was 25 cents per hour and a clerk typist made 35 cents.
She began her teaching career in a one-room school house in Larned, Kansas (the building is still well preserved as a local land mark). She married our father during WWII and moved to Pyote, Texas where he was stationed at Rattlesnake Field. She taught high school there and began a family during the days of food and gasoline rationing.
The family moved to Ogden and Hill AFB in 1953 after the base closed. Not long afterward, she began a teaching career in the Ogden City Schools that lasted over 25 years.
Following her retirement, Reva became active in social athletics. Recreational race walking with Wasatch Hikers and Walkers and square dancing at the Golden Hours Center were two of her favorite pursuits.
Reva’s entire life speaks to the type of person she was. I am unaware of anyone ever speaking ill of her. She was regarded as a professional and compassionate educator. She was dedicated to her religion without offending anyone who might have different practices.
In all of the years we spent together, no one ever made even the slightest negative remark about a very remarkable lady. She was truly loved by all.
She is survived by two children, Sarah Gunderson and Frederick Brittain; her grandchildren, James Gunderson, Christina Scowell, Dianna Lucas, and Ryan Gunderson.
Rest in peace, Reva.
Inurnment will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Lindquist’s Memorial Gardens of the Wasatch, 1718 Combe Road.
