LAYTON – The “CHIEF” Richard “Dick” Gary Ashton, 80, passed away March 9th, 2020 at his home. He was an incredible Husband, Father, and Papa. He was born on January 29th, 1940. He may now Rest in Peace, after a valiant battle with lung cancer. He was born in Provo Utah, son of Elsie Kopp Ashton and Herbert Lee Ashton. Dick was an only child.
He attended Provo High School and joined the United States Air Force at the age of 18. He served for 30 years and retired as a Chief Master Sergeant. In the Military he worked in Military Mail, Military Police, and Civil Engineering. Richard loved the military and the valuable friendships he gained along the way. He was very Patriotic and would do anything for his country.
He married Marjorie “Mickey” Shearing and they were married for 57 years. They continued to raise their two sons, Richard “Ricky” Ashton Jr. and Christopher Ashton in Layton Utah since 1986. He loved both of his sons and enjoyed watching them grow up. He most enjoyed both his boys playing sports and would always brag about them to his friends. Richard was very athletic himself and played football, baseball and almost became a professional boxer. He was a Golden Gloves Champion.
Dick was a dedicated American who loved his Country! He was stationed in Vietnam, Thailand, South Korea, England, France, Texas, Montana, Utah, and many short tours in Europe.
Dick retired as a Chief Master Sergeant in 1988 at Hill Air Force Base. He continued to work until just recently in the transportation business.
He loved the Military, The Dallas Cowboys, fishing and hanging out in Flaming Gorge, trips to Wendover, and his friends. Dick loved his grandchildren with all his heart and enjoyed watching them grow up and play sports.
He is survived by his wife, Marjorie Ashton, two sons’, Richard Ashton Jr. (Holly) and their three children Kade, Jaycee, and Sierra Ashton, Christopher Ashton, (Evette) and grandsons’ Dawson and Brooks Ashton.
He was preceded in death by his Mother Elsie Kopp Ashton and Father Herbert Lee Ashton.
Do to the Coronavirus the family is cancelling the funeral service.
Graveside services will be held Saturday, March 21, 2022 at 2 p.m. at Lindquist’s Memorial Park at Layton, 1867 No. Fairfield Road. There will be no public visitation.
