S. Richard Bennion

S. Richard Bennion, loving husband, father, and grandfather passed away unexpectedly Saturday, December 22, 2018 at McKay-Dee Hospital.
He was born January 1, 1943 in Afton, Wyoming to Stanley and Norene Roberts Bennion. Richard’s parents moved to Roy, Utah in 1951. Richard graduated from Weber High School in 1961. While in high school he served as president of the Boys Association. From 1963 to 1965, Richard served a 2 ½ year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He spent 27 months serving in the Bavarian Mission and 3 months in the South German Mission.
He married Judy Darlene Richins on August 25, 1967 in the Salt Lake Temple. Together they had 5 children; they later divorced. On November 19, 1993, Richard married Cathy Lynn Kearl in Roy, Utah. Their marriage was later sealed in the Ogden Temple.
Richard attended Weber State College where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business management. He was the owner and operator of The Fabric Fair in Clearfield, Utah for 10 years. Later he worked as a project manager for Enable Industries Inc. working with special needs adults. Richard had a special talent for working with people with disabilities and was dearly beloved by all with whom he associated. In his role with Enable, Richard helped with Special Olympics Utah.
Richard served for a time in the U.S. Air Force Reserve.
He was president of the Clearfield Chamber of Commerce and Kiwanis Club from 1974 to 1975.
Richard was an avid fan of Weber State basketball. For nearly 40 years he volunteered at the Dee Events Center as the game clock operator for the men’s team.
Richard was a very kind, loving, and generous man. He willingly served others and gave of himself. He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served faithfully in many positions over the years, including bishopric counselor, high priest group leader, young men’s leader, cub master, and nursery leader, the latter being one of his most favorite callings.
Richard loved being in the outdoors. He enjoyed spending time at the family cabin in the Uinta Mountains, going to Bear Lake, fishing at Whitney Reservoir and Trial Lake, snowmobiling, and playing golf.
Richard loved to garden and work in the yard. He always had an abundance of tomatoes, green beans, spinach, and rhubarb to share with family and friends. He got a kick out of growing odd-looking vegetables such as pumpkins, squash, gourds, and ornamental corn. He was particularly fond of roses. He had a talent for woodworking and he took delight in making rocking chairs for his grandchildren. He was an animal lover and had a special relationship with his little dog Shasta.
Richard leaves behind a wonderful blended family. He is survived by his wife, ten children: Heidi (Derek) Hancock, Lindsay Bennion, Heather (Michael) Butler, Lance (Alysa) Bennion, Landon (Jessica) Bennion, Jason (Elizabeth) Harrison, Brandon (Kimberly) Harrison, Justin (Nichole) Harrison, Chad (Bridget) Harrison, Amber Harrison; 28 grandchildren with another on the way; two brothers, David L. (Sharon) Bennion, Keith (Paula) Bennion; one sister Merrilyn Hoopes. He was preceeded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday December 31, 2018 at Lindquist’s Roy Mortuary, 3333 West 5600 South. The family will meet with friends Sunday, December 30th from 6 to 8 p.m. and Monday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the mortuary.
Interment, Lindquist’s Washington Heights Memorial Park, 4500 Washington Blvd.
