Richard N. Cleaver, the oldest of eight children, born to Bede and Ruby Clapsadle, died Wednesday, July 1, 2015 at the George E. Wahlen Veterans Home in Ogden, Utah.

Richard grew up in Grampian, PA and attended schools in Grampian and Clearfield, PA.

Richard is survived by Dorothy, his wife of 61 years. They were blessed with four children; Randall Cleaver, Bountiful, Utah; Cindy Cleaver, Grand Junction, CO; Barry Cleaver (Jelea), Logan, OH; Rebecca Gailey (Russell), Layton; Utah; nine grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. He loved his family very much and worked hard for them. He delighted in all the children.

Richard joined the Army at an early age and was assigned to the 11 th Airborne Division at Ft. Campbell, KY; during a practice jump he saved the life of a fellow chutist whom chute did not open. President Dwight D. Eisenhower presented him with the Soldier’s Medal for Heroism, the highest peacetime medal. After an honorable discharge from the Army, Richard re-enlisted in the U.S. Air Force proudly serving his country for 20 plus years. He was stationed in eight different areas including Vietnam. After retiring he started a successful business, sold real estate and worked for the Government at Hill Air Force Base. He worked as a hazardous cargo inspector also as Chief Real Estate Officer at Hill AFB.

Richard was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church and was active in the Knights of Columbus for many years. He was a member of VFW, a 32degree Mason (inactive) Gateway Lodge #29 in Clearfield, Utah. He was an El Kalah Shriner where he was part of the clown club participating as “Lucky the Clown.” He loved making people laugh especially hospitalized children. Richard accomplished much during his life.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, two brothers and one grandson.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, July 6, 2015 at 10 a.m. at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, 210 South Chapel Street, Layton, Utah with Reverend Father Clarence Sandoval. Friends may visit family Sunday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary, 1867 No. Fairfield Road. A Vigil with Rosary will be held 7:30 p.m.

Interment, Lindquist’s Memorial Park at Layton, 1867 No. Fairfield Road.

A special thanks to Dr. Mohr and the staff at George E. Wahlen Veterans Home for their loving care and kindness.
