Dick Curtis passed away on Friday, January 17, 2014 with his family by his side, after a short illness. He was born at home on June 2, 1930 to Frank and Gretta Curtis in Pratt, Kansas. He graduated from Pratt High School and Pratt Junior College. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1952 and was a trainer at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma, before serving a year in the Korean War leading a 6-man artillery battery. After his return from Korea, Dick attended Kansas University in Lawrence, KS, while resuming his career working for J.C. Penney which had begun at age 13 in Pratt, Kansas. His full-time career began working for a nephew of J.C. Penney in Kansas City. Eventually, Dick was a manager of eight J.C. Penney stores around the country before retiring in 1990. He married Verlene Francis Curtis on May 27, 1964 and together they raised five children. They were married for 50 years. Dick was an accomplished vocalist since his youth, and sang tenor in twelve church choirs, most recently at Community United Methodist Church in Washington Terrace. He was preceded in death by his wife, Verlene, his parents, his brother Chandler Curtis and a granddaughter, Michelle Royster. He is survived by his five children, Richard “Rick” (Nanette) Curtis, their children, Josh, and Leah of Moon Township, PA; Leslee (Scott) Coates, their children, Jason Coates, Sara (John) McLaughlin, Travis (McKael) Coates, all of Ogden; Kris (Ed) Lueders, their children, Ryan (Brittany) Lueders, Shawn (Keri) Lueders, Jill Lueders, Tim (Brittney) Lueders, all of Ogden; Sally (Ron) Jones, and children, Jera Sanders and Curtis Royster, all of Ogden; Rolene Gray, her children, Brett (Danna) Gray, Mike (Wendy) Gray, all of Ogden; 22 great grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother-in-law, Robert “E” Francis and family. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 22nd at 11 a.m. at Lindquist‘s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd. The family will meet with friends Tuesday from 6 to 8p.m. and Wednesday from 9:45 to 10:45a.m. at the mortuary. Interment, Spanish Fork Cemetery. The family would like to express a special thanks to Legacy Home Health & Hospice for their extraordinary hospice services, and especially to Bonnie.
