Richard John Hawkins
KAYSVILLE – Richard John Hawkins, 77, of Kaysville, UT passed away on Tuesday, September 16, 2014.
Richard was born in Stockton, CA; on May 27, 1937 to John Fairfield Hawkins and Ruby Spencer Hawkins. His formative years were spent under the care of his Aunt Pearl Budge in Logan, UT. There was a deep love and respect for his Aunt Pearl.
His childhood was filled with curious adventure. He performed in plays, played football and participated heavily in the scouting program. He was a third generation Eagle Scout, which has proved to be a legacy he has passed on proudly to his children and grandchildren.
Richard served a mission for the LDS Church in the Southern Australia.
While obtaining his undergraduate degree, he met Glenna Joan McKean in October 1962. They later married in the Logan Temple for time and eternity on March 15, 1963. He valued education and was a lifelong learner. He graduated from Utah State University with a master’s degree in education.
In 1970, he joined the Air Force and served honorably for 20 years as a LDS/Protestant Chaplain. Major Hawkins served tours in Turkey, Thailand and Egypt. He also proudly served with the Civil Air Patrol and Utah National Guard. He influenced the lives of many through his service. He was civic minded and a true patriot, retiring in 1990.
Richard is survived by his wife, Joan of Kaysville and his children: Karen (Rick) Line, Victorville, CA; Charmel (Brian) Buhl, Boulder City, NV; Richard (Sara) Hawkins, Idaho Falls, ID; Kathryn (Mike) Cabral, Redlands CA; Joseph (Robin) Hawkins, Salt Lake City; Joshua (Jeannine) Hawkins, West Jordan; Jennifer (Brian) Jackson, Syracuse; Howard (Samantha) Hawkins, Twin Falls, ID; 23 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; brother Spencer (Janet) Hawkins, Layton, and sister DiAnn (Thayne) Vaughan, Great Falls, MT.
Richard is preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Kathryn Paula Hawkins.
Funeral services will be held Monday, September 22, 2014 at 11 a.m. at the Kaysville East Stake Center, 201 S. 600 E. Friends may visit with family on Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist’s Kaysville Mortuary, 400 N. Main and Monday at the church from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.
Interment, Utah Veterans Memorial Park.
