Richard LaMar “Larry” Jones
October 21, 1926 ~ December 9, 2016
LIBERTY – Larry was born in Ogden, UT at the Dee Hospital on October 21, 1926. He passed on Friday, December 9, 2016 in Idaho Falls, ID, age 90. His parents were Richard Preston “P.R.” Jones from Eden, UT, and Florence Verna Folkman Jones from Plain City, UT.
He married Bertha “Betty” Dean Gerritsen on December 7, 1946 in Elko, NV. Their marriage was solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on March 14, 1952. Four children were born to them, Charlotte Diane Jones - who died on her planned wedding day, in a crash at Pineview Dam Spillway on April 7, 1966 (Fiancé – James Dennis McKinstry); Richard Ralph Gerritsen (Rose) Jones; James Christopher (Kelle) Jones and Rulon Kent (Kathy) Jones. Larry and Betty divorced in 1975; Betty later died in 2001. Larry has one surviving sister, Rosalyn Jones Holgreen (Gerald – died 1996). Also survived by many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.
Larry is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and is a BSA Eagle Scout. He served in many callings including Sunday School Teacher, home teaching, and scouting. Educated in SLC, UT schools, he attended Webster and Oquirrh (O-Kwer) Elementary, Bryant Jr. High, and South High School (which Larry called THE best school!!).
He joined the US Navy during WWII and went to San Diego, CA. Later, was honorably discharged. He returned to SLC and finished High School. He attended the University of Utah and the University of Idaho in Moscow, ID.
Larry Jones was a world traveler. He filmed wildlife and made several movies. He holds world records for several trophy animals with a bow and arrow. He enjoyed many sports especially, fishing, hunting, and football and he always enjoyed and appreciated a good meal. Larry was a hardworker and was very skilled in the construction and building trades; even building many homes for family members. He also had a beautiful singing voice and was in the Glee Club in school.
Later married Marilyn Huss Clark (deceased 1988) who had four children, two of whom Larry adopted, Kevin and Mike Clark. Later married Jeri Code Holbrook (deceased 2005).
When he was 20 years old, a doctor told him if he would take life very easy, then he would live until “possibly 35 years old”. In typical Larry fashion – he didn’t take it easy at all and lived until he was 90.
