Richard Leland Judd

October 17, 1944 — February 25, 2023

Richard Leland Judd passed away on February 25, 2023, at the age of 78. He led an extraordinary life and was a true example of love, integrity, and kindness.  Richard grew up in Ogden, Utah, the oldest of 10 siblings, 6 sisters and 3 brothers. At 16, he graduated from barber college, making him the youngest barber in the State of Utah. He graduated from Ben Lomond High School where he was Student Body President. He went on to serve a 3-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Austria.  Following his mission, he attended Weber State University and earned his bachelor’s degree in political science. He later obtained his master’s degree in public administration from BYU.

While at Weber, Richard met Karen Sue Cox, his lifelong sweetheart. He saw her in a bookstore while trying to find a date for one of his friends. He agreed to ask her out for him, but only if he could take her out after. The two married in March of 1969, and they began their journey together.

Richard was a leader in business. He held many positions and worked in many capacities including sales, finance, consulting, and investment brokering. He developed his own sales training program and successfully ran his own business for many years. He had two rules of business; “Always answer the phone and always buy lunch”.  Richard was a master at communicating and building relationships. He was the best at what he did because he always believed that whatever he was offering, would be making a difference in people’s lives.

Later in life, Rich became passionate about acting and was involved in many plays. He loved making connections with people and was always looking for opportunities to serve others. He made spending time with his loved ones a priority, and enjoyed golfing, family trips to Fish Lake, karaoke, and playing card games with his grandchildren.

Richard was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and fulfilled many callings throughout his life, including Bishop of his ward in West Bountiful. His testimony of the Savior influenced all that he did in life.

He passed away after a courageous, years-long battle with Leukemia. Initially, he wasn’t given much time to live, but through the actions of a selfless donor, was given the precious gift of five more years of life. His family will always be grateful for all the medical professionals that attended to him these last years. Karen cared for him tirelessly and was always by his side. He suffered and endured much, but we will always cherish the time we were able to spend with him. He will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved him.

Richard is survived by his loving wife, Karen; 5 children, Heidi (Ashley) Allred, Taylor (Emily) Judd, Milissa Judd, Emily (Chris) Langeveld, and Matt (Kristi) Judd; 17 grandchildren, 6 sisters, and 2 brothers. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, and a son, David.
