Richard Kay Brimhall of North Ogden, Utah passed away on September 6, 2023 in Layton, Utah at the age of 95. He was surrounded by loved ones and the caring staff of Fairfield Village who got to know and love him as we do.
Kay was beloved brother, uncle, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. He had a brilliant mind and a generous spirit that touched the lives of many. Kay was born February 22, 1928 in Provo, Utah to Pearl and Enos Brimhall. Kay is survived by his sons, Richard Brimhall and Lyle Bryan; daughters, Terry Buhecker, Tanya (Ray) Christiansen, and Rae England; and too many grandchildren to name. Kay was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Alice; his sons, Daniel Brimhall and Chris Brimhall; three grandchildren; and a son-in-law.
He graduated from Provo High School, and both the University of Utah and Brigham Young University, with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering and later a PhD. Kay used his degree to begin his professional career designing interchanges on highways in Idaho. Albert Einstein was an idol and Kay was passionate about math and the theory of relativity. This led to a successful career working at Thiokol, where he made significant contributions, such as calculating the math needed for the rocket boosters that launched multiple NASA shuttles into space. He and Alice spent many years traveling together and visited countries across the world where New Zealand, Japan, and Spain were among a few.
Kay, along with his wife, was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where he volunteered and made a positive impact through years of service to his stake and ward in North Ogden.
He was a patriot at the heart of everything he did. He was deeply passionate about making sure everyone had a flag to display and dedicated his time to passing the flags out; he always had a few in the back seat of his car. He will always be remembered for giving people second chances and seeing the good in his fellow Americans.
Kay always said, “Anyone could be smart if they used their imagination, that’s the key.”
