LAYTON - Richard W. Knowlton, age 78, died at the Rocky Mountain Care Center on Monday, August 23, 2010 from complications due to Parkinson''s disease.

Richard was born in Ogden, Utah on November 30, 1931 to Franklin Richard and Mary Edwina Knowlton. He served in the USAF during the Korean War. Richard graduated from Utah State Agriculture College, where he met and married Marlene Coley, his wife of 54 years, in the Salt Lake City Temple.

Richard taught school for 29 years in the same school and same room at EM Whitesides, an elementary school named after his grandfather. In the summers, Richard worked building bridges with his father and brother. After retirement, he worked for the IRS for several years. Richard loved to read books and share his knowledge. He was a good father and enjoyed helping people.

He was the proud grandfather of nine grandchildren, Kimberly, Jason, Nicholas, Spencer, Natalie, Robert, Zachary, Winston and Alan Joseph.

Richard was preceded in death by his mother and father, two sisters, Ester Grahel and Mary Christensen.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 28, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. at the Lindquist''s Layton Mortuary, 1867 N. Fairfield Road. Friends may visit family Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday one hour prior to services at the mortuary.

Interment, Logan City Cemetery.
