Richard Earl “Dick” Stephens
Richard Earl “Dick” Stephens, our beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, left us on October 6, 2013, with family by his side.
Richard was born on February 25, 1924 in Ogden, Utah to Aldo and Laura Stephens. As a child he was fond of practical jokes and getting into various kinds of trouble. Throughout his adulthood he enjoyed cars; working with his hands; meeting new people; and helping his friends, family, and neighbors.
On September 26, 1947, Richard married Barbara Burdett. In the early years of their marriage, Richard and Barbara lived in a variety of places in Utah and California. They loved outdoor sports and were avid skiers, golfers, and bicyclists for many years. In 1966, Richard designed and built a house in Kaysville that was their family home until Barbara’s death in 2011.
Richard was a gregarious man who was always ready with a warm handshake or pat on the shoulder. His family and friends remember his loyalty, his fondness for stories and reminiscences, and his readiness to lend a hand or offer companionship to those in need. His greatest gifts to those he loved were the small, daily expressions of affection: the offer to check the air pressure in your tires, the call about an interesting newspaper or television story, the help staining your deck or fixing your water heater, and, for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, the sideways hug and the “love ya, kid.”
Richard is survived by his children, Scott (Cindy), Doug, and Ann (Keven); nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held Saturday, October 12, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at Kaysville City Cemetery. Friends and family of Richard are welcome to attend.
Services entrusted to Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary, 1867 No. Fairfield Road.
Richard’s family thanks his nurse, Bonnie, and the staff at Applegate Hospice for their kindness and care.
