Robert Glen Bateman

June 19, 1925 ~ March 16, 2015

Robert Glen Bateman passed away on Monday, March 16, 2015 at the age of 89.  Bob succumbed to the effects of old age and Alzheimer’s.

Bob was born on June 19, 1925 in Ogden, Utah, the son of Ruby Rose Cowling and William Prentis Bateman.  He was raised in Ogden, attending Pingree and Lewis Schools.  He graduated from Ogden High School, class of 1943, where he played on the baseball team. At the age of 13, following his father’s stroke, Bob began working as a grocery delivery boy and later worked for the railroad throughout high school and college.  Bob was drafted into the Army, after high school, and served honorably in the Army Air Corps.

As a Veteran, Bob used the GI Bill to attend the University of Utah, graduating in 1951 with a degree in metallurgical engineering.  Bob married June Barnes on September 6, 1950.  They were devoted to each other until June’s passing on September 22, 2000.

Following graduation, Bob and June lived throughout the United States, including Pittsburg, PA; Springfield, MA and Sunnyvale, CA.  They returned to Ogden in 1956, making their home in Washington Terrace where they raised their family.

During his career, Bob worked for Westinghouse and Marquardt.  In 1968, Bob and his friends, EV Faunce, and Bud Graham, founded Flameco Engineering.  Starting with four part-time employees, they grew Flameco into a very successful 200+ employee Aerospace Company, by specializing in manufacturing Titanium parts for both Military and Commercial Aviation needs.  In 1983, Flameco was named the small business of the year, with Vice President Walter Mondale presenting the award to Bob and Ev.

While a great business man, Bob was an even greater husband, father, friend, and neighbor.  Bob was quietly generous with his time, talents, and money, helping those in need.  He had a wonderful sense of humor and was a true gentleman in every sense of the word.

Bob enjoyed a wide range of activities throughout his life including hunting, golfing, skiing, and racquetball.  Bob played basketball at 6 a.m. every morning for 20+ years with his buddies at the old Deseret Gym.  Bob owned season tickets to the Jazz for many years.  He worked the daily crosswords well into his 80’s, golfed at all the local courses and was an owner of Wolf Creek in Eden.  He attended his kid’s activities faithfully and served as scout master in the Washington Terrace 1 st Ward. Daily visits with his elderly mother, Ruby, were an important part of his life.  With all of those things, Bob remained faithful to his wife and family.

Bob is survived by his three children, Jayne (Hal) LaFleur, Lisa Chandler, and Bill (Gaylene) Bateman; brother-in-law, John Combs; 14 grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, June; and sisters, Doris Combs and Marilyn Norton.

Special thanks go to Jayne and Hal for their loving care the last nine years as Bob’s health declined, Canyon Hospice, Megan, Brian, and Bruce; and Avalon Care Center in Bountiful, Utah.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 23, 2015 at 11 a.m. at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd.  Friends may visit with family on Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Monday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the mortuary.  Interment, Lindquist’s Washington Heights Memorial Park, 4500 Washington Blvd.
