PLEASANT VIEW – On Wednesday, September 23, 2009, we lost from this life our sweet, loving husband, father and grandfather. Robert Lawrence Burton passed away peacefully surrounded by his family from complications due to pulmonary fibrosis at the age of 77.
Bob was born July 17, 1932 in Vernal, Utah, to Lawrence and Alice Kanistanaux Burton.
He married his sweetheart, Moana Smith, on January 13, 1951. Their marriage was solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on August 15, 1960. Together they had five children and were about to celebrate their 59th anniversary.
Bob was a convert to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and served in many callings including counselor in the Bishopric in Lovelock, Nevada, counselor and Branch President in the Tahoe North Branch, and Bishop of the Pleasant View 5th Ward. He and Moana served missions in Ohio and Palmyra, New York.
Bob retired from the Southern Pacific Railroad following 40 years of devoted service.
To know Bob is to love him; his loving sense of humor always kept us laughing. He was a loving, righteous man who always thought of others. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. His wisdom and love were a treasure to his family. We will miss his hugs and kisses, his quick wit, and the nicknames he gave us all. He always said he was doing 140 miles an hour and that was on curves - we suspect he did not take this one any different. He loved traveling with his wife, riding horses, and fishing and hunting with his sons, grandsons and friends. He treasured his daughter and granddaughters and was a good friend to all. We will remember him as the strong, faithful, loving, happy man he was.
Bob is survived by his wife, Moana Burton; sons, Steven (Cathy) Burton, Barry (Gayle) Burton, Randy (Gwen) Burton, Corey Burton; and his daughter, Tara (Lonnie) Kendall; 17 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and his brother, Jack (Larae) Shaffer.
His parents and two brothers, Bill Burton and Isaac Shaffer, preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Pleasant View 5th Ward Chapel, 900West Pleasant View Drive.
