Robert Timothy “Tim” Layton was born of goodly parents on his older brother's birthday, September 25, 1937 in Salt Lake City, Utah. His father, Elmer Jarman Layton, was custodian of the 21st LDS Ward building for many years and Tim often worked with him. His mother, Lucille Elizabeth Mudge, was Homemaker Leader in the Relief Society and she taught him many different crafts. Elmer Don Layton was his older brother and he had an older sister, Shirley Mildred Layton (Daugherty) and a younger brother, George Howard Layton. The family lived on “I” Street between 5th and 6th Avenues and he attended Longfellow Elementary School, Bryant Junior High School and West High School, graduating in 1956. Tim had several friends in his youth and kept up correspondance with them through all the years, getting together once in a while.
From 1958 until 1961 he served a mission in Northern California. His assignments led him to San Francisco, Valejo, Shark Park, and Rancho Cordova among others. The friends he made and his converts have been very special to him and he again has kept in contact with some of them.
Upon returning home Tim enrolled at the University of Utah majoring in Physics and minoring in Mathematics while working repairing stenorette machines as well as other jobs. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1964.
He married his sweetheart, Olive Holt, October 1, 1964 in the Salt Lake Temple and then the couple went to California to look for work. Finding a job at System Development Corporation he was sent to Corvallis, Oregon to work on the SAGE System using one of the first computers in existance at the time. Their first two children, Carolyn and Robert Timothy Jr., were born while there. Tim served a Stake Mission and helped with the irrigation system at the stake farm.
Returning to the Southern California area they bought a home in Westchester, just north of LAX airport. Tim worked for the Aerospace Corporation doing computer system design. He again served a Stake Mission and became a Counselor in the Stake Mission. Three more children were born to them, Lowell James, and twins, Candace Marie and Crystal Elaine. Lifelong friends were made while in California and visits with some of them are made frequently.
The move to Utah was made because son, Robert, was suffering from bouts of asthma. It took a leap of faith but Tim was able to get a job with Eyring Research Corporation doing contract work at Hill Air Force Base. After a few years he took a job with Eaton-Kenway Corporation doing product control in automated warehousing. Then again returning to Hill Air Force Base he became a Civil Servant and worked on the F-16 computers. The last three years of his career he worked on the MilStar satelite system which took him to Sudbury, Massachusetts for a year and the rest in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
After retirement Tim and Olive served a mission in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and again made many dear friends. They worked as an office couple doing proselyting in the evenings. When they returned home they served a mission in the Family History Library in Salt Lake City working on the British floor for 4 ½ years. Following that they served one year at the Family History Center in Layton, Utah.
Service has been Tim's watchword. He gained great satisfaction in helping others and making new friends. His greatest piece of advice to his children was to always ask yourself, “What would Jesus do?” and then do it. He will be greatly missed by both family and friends “till we meet again at Jesus' feet.”
Tim is survived by his wife Olive of Kaysville: brothers Elmer Don (Karma), George Howard (Molly), and his sister Shirley Mildred Daugherty, his children Carolyn (Boyd Wheeler), Robert (Amanda), Lowell (Michie), the twins Candace (Adam Judson) and Crystal Layton Wilcox, 15 grandchildren and 4 (going on 6) great-grandchildren.
