Robert Lynn Nielsen

Robert L. Nielsen Surrounded by his loving family, Robert L. Nielsen, 78, peacefully passed through the veil on October 13, 2011 from complications of Lewy Body Dementia (a cousin of Parkinson’s). He was born in Hyde Park, Utah on September 8, 1933 to Rudger F. and Druzella Saunders Nielsen. He and his sweetheart of 59 years, Ruth Nelson, met in the 9th grade. After graduation from North Cache High School, they were married September 9, 1952, in the Logan LDS Temple by Ruth’s father. They were blessed with six special daughters who had the privilege of helping take care of him in his final months. Bob and Ruth moved from Logan to Ogden in 1953, where he started work for the Ogden City Schools in the Purchasing Department. He later went to work at Weber State College, where he became the Purchasing Director and worked there for 30 years. While at Weber, he wrote a tribute to the staff that is still displayed on a plaque on campus. He was involved in community and church service all his life. He served in many church callings including Bishop of the Ogden 32nd Ward, High Councilor, and he had the blessing of being the first President of the Harrisville Stake. Together he and Ruth served in the Tacoma, WA, Nauvoo Temple, and Ogden Temple missions. After returning from Nauvoo, he was called to serve as a sealer in the Ogden Temple and had the privilege of sealing six of his grandchildren and many friends. This was a calling he dearly loved. He excelled at many talents and hobbies, especially gardening, fly fishing, leatherwork and wood turning. He was a beekeeper for 56 years and taught beekeeping classes for BYU and Weber Extension. He also had articles printed in the American Bee Journal. Bob is survived by his wife, Ruth, daughters, Louise (Kevin) Later, Layton; Janet (Bill) Shurtleff, South Ogden; Jean (Larry) Webster, Syracuse; Gwen (Lindsay) Tanner, Heber; Diane (Jeff) Jensen, Elwood, and Trudy (Brent) Maltby, Harrisville; 25 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren, with one more on the way, and one brother, Florin R. Nielsen, Salt Lake City. He was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, October 18, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at the Harrisville South Chapel, 113 Childs Ave. Friends may visit with family on Monday from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. at Lindquist’s North Ogden Mortuary, 2140 North Washington Blvd., and Tuesday from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. at the church. Interment, Hyde Park Cemetery, Hyde Park, Utah. The family would like to thank Susan and her wonderful staff at Alpine Hospice, with a special thanks to Robert. We would not have survived without all of you. A special thanks also to friends Ron and Ben for their love, support, and friendship through the years. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the LDS Temple Patron Assistance Fund.
