Robert Reed Petersen

April 13, 1941 ~ August 22, 2022

Robert Reed Petersen passed away on August 22, 2022 surrounded by his family after a short illness at the young age of 81. Robert was born on April 13, 1941 to Reed and Ethel Lundahl Petersen in Ogden, Utah.  He was the brother to Dixie Jackson (Bruce) and Curtis Petersen.

Robert married his high school sweetheart, Janet Argyle, in 1962. They met in kindergarten and were married for 60 years. They raised three daughters in Riverdale before retiring in the foothills of Ogden where Robert spent much of his youth. Daughters, Darci Stapley (Todd), Shelly Petersen, and Gina Petersen Young (Mark) will miss him deeply as he was a great influence in their lives.

Robert was a true “Ogdenite” throughout his life.  When he was not running around Ogden as a young boy, he spent time working on the family ranch in Idaho. He had a strong work ethic early in his life achieving Eagle Scout in 1955. He graduated from Ogden High School, Class of ’59, where he played on the football team that won the first state championship in 49 years while Janet cheered him on as a O.H.S. cheerleader. He graduated from Weber State University in business where he was a proud member of the Excelsior fraternity.  Robert continued his support of Weber State and was season ticket holder of the basketball team.

Robert exemplified someone who worked hard and played hard. While attending college he worked nights at the railroad. Shortly after graduating from college, he joined the family business and had the opportunity to build the round house for the trains at Promontory Point. After a long career in commercial construction, he built and ran the Terrace Depot in Washington Terrace, Utah until he retired. It gave him great joy to be a contributing member of the Washington Terrace community as a small business owner.

Somewhere along the way, Robert discovered golf which became a passion in his life as he met many friends on the course. To say that Robert was a good golfer is an understatement as many of his friends will say that they have lost many a wager to him on a hole. It was all fun and games to him as the most important thing for him was the comradery with his great friends. He was a member of the Ogden Golf and Country Club but found great kindred spirits playing with his friends at the El Monte public Golf Course where he spent most of his time.

Robert put family first and supported his daughters and their families throughout his life.  He was a great mentor to his daughters throughout their careers and was the number one supporter of his grandchildren in all their endeavors whether it was sports, arts, etc.  He was always there and made family a priority which will forever be cherished by his grandchildren. He loved deeply, but quietly. We never doubted his devotion to us and others.

Robert was known around Ogden as Robert, Bob, Pete, Peter, Bobby and the occasional Baby Face by his sister Dixie. He was an all-around great guy who exemplified honesty and integrity. He lived his life by the golden rule and was a great example that we all aspire to be. He will be greatly missed.

Robert was preceded in death by his father, Reed Petersen and his mother, Ethel. He is survived by his wife, Janet; his three daughters, Darci (Todd), Shelly, and Gina (Mark); grandchildren, Taylor Sharp (Josh), Trevor Stapley (Charlee), Breanne Stapley, Parker Verducci, Kylee Verducci, Gillian Young, and Avery Young; great-grandchildren, Beckett, Harlow, Hayes and Everly Sharp; Klay and Mack Stapley.
