Robert Edward Roy died Oct 21, 2024 at the Country Pines Assisted Living Facility at the age of 100.
Robert Roy was born May 3, 1924 in Oakland CA, as an only child to Mary (Campbell, Roy) Good and Robert Earl Roy. He graduated High School Jan 1944 and enlisted in the Army Feb 1944 serving as a Medical Technician in the 13th Field Hospital. He joined the Normandy Invasion on D+2, followed the frontlines through Northern France, the Battle of the Bulge, the Battle of Remagen, and the Rhineland and Central Europe Campaign. Following the end of the War, he was discharged Dec 1945 at the rank of Tec 5. Decorations/Citations awarded were the European/African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Bronze Service Arrowhead, and World War II Victory Medal.
He returned to San Francisco CA and soon met his wife Ethel E. Rogers, also a WW II veteran as an Army nurse who served stateside. They married on Oct 18, 1946 and had two daughters born in Palo Alto CA. While in CA he briefly worked for United Airlines, then for Standard Oil Co as a station Assistant Manager, and then for Culligan Water Softener as an installer. His wife was originally from Iowa and after a number of years in CA, they moved to Iowa to help care for her parents. He briefly worked on a cattle farm, as a Fuller Brush salesman, and then for many years as a Borden’s Dairy delivery driver. It was at this time that the next three children were born, another daughter, and two sons. Borden’s Dairy pulled out of Iowa and he held a number of jobs before joining Burlington Northern delivering freight throughout towns in South Central Iowa. Following Burlington Northern, his longest employment was as a self-employed Professional Window Washer for approximately 20 years. Ethel died of cancer Oct 1994 after 48 years of marriage. He married a second time to Marjorie Crabtree in 1995 continuing to live in Iowa. In 2008 they moved to Houston TX to be near her daughter, who was the only girl of five children. Marjorie died in 2013 from complications of diabetes after 18 years of marriage. Following this loss, he moved to Utah and lived his remaining years with his 3rd daughter until his passing.
His interest had always been in flying and he was photographed as a young boy building a balsa wood model airplane. When enlisting in the Army he wanted to be a pilot, but God saw fit to put him in the Medical Corps, which may have saved his life. He later took flying lessons with his oldest son and was able to solo but never obtained a license.
He was a member of the Worldwide Church of God, and later followed that to the United Church of God. He was a member of good standing for over 50 years.
He was preceded in death by his father Robert Earl Roy, mother Mary Good, 1st wife, Ethel Roy, 2nd wife Marjorie Roy, stepsons Kevin Crabtree, and Alan Crabtree. He leaves behind five children: Linda (Charles) White, Beverly (Russell) Conaway, Rena (David (deceased)) Hunt, Rodney (Dottie) Roy, and Tod (Hilda) Roy; and three stepchildren: Dana Crabtree, Perry (Cheri) Crabtree, and Sheri (Ronald) Hutto and step daughter-in-law, Debbie (Alan (deceased)) Crabtree. He also leaves behind six grandchildren, five great grandchildren, six great great grandchildren; and from his second wife he leaves behind seven grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren.
At this time the family wishes to thank: his primary care physician Dr. Butters for the ten years of care; the staff at the Country Pines Assisted Living facility; and to the Independence Hospice Care team of Amy, Jesse, and Dr Taylor whom he kept busy for the short time they cared for him.
Robert will be cremated and a Celebration of Life Memorial service will be held at Lindquist's Memorial Park at Layton, 1867 North Fairfield Road, Layton on Wednesday, December 4, 2024 at 2 p.m. His ashes will be buried at a later date with his first wife back in Boone Iowa with family members in attendance.
