Robert J. “Bob” Stegen, 89, passed away Wednesday, September 18, 2013 in Ogden.
He was born July 26, 1924 in Ogden, Utah to Samuel V. and Lucile Fowler Stegen. He was reared and lived most of life in the Ogden area and graduated from Ogden High School in 1942.
On June 4, 1950, Bob married Junice Nesseth in the St. Petri Lutheran Church, near her home in Williams County, North Dakota. She was the center of his world and they had a wonderful life together in their 55 years of marriage. They were members of the Presbyterian Church.
During World War II he served with the U.S. Army in the European Theater, Rhineland Campaign, as a First Lieutenant in the 75th Infantry Division. He was awarded two Bronze Stars, one for Valor the other for Meritorious Achievement in Action, and a Purple Heart for wounded in action.
Bob served 34 years as a Civil Servant at the Utah General Depot, later the Defense Depot Ogden and was the senior civilian in the Directorate of Storage and Transportation when he retired. He was very conscientious and committed to his job and received many awards including the three highest given by the Defense Logistics Agency that included a Top Ten Employees in Defense Logistic Agency, the Exceptional Civilian Service Medal, and Meritorious Performance Medal. He was also nominated in the Agency for the President’s Managerial Award.
Bob had many military and civilian friends from all position levels at the Depot and was very proud of his relationship with his many fellow workers. He referred to them as his friends and always said, when referring to any of them, “they worked with me”, and not saying, “they worked for me” he was truly a people person.
He enjoyed his Ogden High School reunions and served twice as Chairman of the Ogden High “Class of 1942” Reunion Committee. He was active in the 75th Division Veterans Association, attending many reunions and maintaining a close relationship with those he served with in combat. Bob served for many years as President or as a Member of the Board of Directors for the Knollwood Condo Association. He served as an Officer in the Military Order of the Purple Heart and was Department Adjunct for the State of Utah. One of the things he liked to do was to meet weekly with his oldest lifelong friends for coffee and as he said, “and tell lies”.
He, Junice and their children vacationed in R.V.’s and visited every state in the lower 48; seeing beautiful country and visiting historical cities. He loved history, recording music and said “they were his hobbies and no matter how much he worked on them, he could never finish them.”
Bob was preceded in death by his wife, Junice “Junie”, two brothers, Ralph W. Stegen, Wallace E. Stegen, and one sister, Margaret S. Love.
He is survived by two sons, Ralph (Kathy) Stegen Oro Valley, AZ; Robert C. Death leaves a heartache that no one can heal, Love leaves memories that no one can steal. We will all hold on to our memories of Dad. He lived a wonderful life full of love, great friends and was a true patriot of this country. We will definitely all miss him, but are so comforted knowing that he and Mom are together again.
