While returning from a vacation with his wife, Robert (Bob) Clyde Tonioli died unexpectedly, at the age of 60, on Monday, June 27, 2011 in a hospital in New York City from a sudden illness.
Bob was born on November 2, 1950 in Tooele, Utah, the second of three boys born to Budd and Lucille Tonioli. At the age of four, he was one of the first people in the nation to survive open-heart surgery. He graduated from Tooele High School in 1969 and served an LDS mission in the Kentucky-Tennessee mission from 1970-1972. He graduated from Brigham Young University in 1976 with a B. S. degree in Range Science. While attending BYU, he met his wife, Jean Johansen, and was married in the Cardston, Alberta, Canada LDS Temple on December 22, 1973.
Bob worked for the U.S. Forest Service in Range Conservation and Fire Management for over 35 years. He worked for districts in Winnemucca, Nevada, Buhl and Soda Springs, Idaho, and Ogden, Salt Lake and Provo, Utah. At the time of his death, he was the Intermountain Regional Fire Operations Specialist for Utah, Idaho, Nevada and Wyoming. He trained and worked with fire agencies throughout the Wasatch Front and was respected for his knowledge and ability to teach and mentor. He had a sixth sense for fire behavior and was fortunate that his job allowed him to do what he loved.
Bob loved spending time with his wife, children, and grandchildren, and his greatest accomplishment was being an outstanding husband and father. Service was always one of his greatest priorities. If someone needed help, no matter when or where, he was always one of the first on the scene and one of the last to leave. His spare time was spent working in his yard, and vacationing with his family, especially in Waterton Lakes National Park in Southern Alberta, Canada. He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many leadership positions in his ward and stake.
Bob is survived by his wife, Jean and his four children: Jason (Stacy) Tonioli, Hooper; Kristin (Dan) Brandenburg, Clearfield; Karen (Randon) Wilson, Gilbert, AZ; and Jennifer Tonioli Anderson, Roy. He is also survived by his five grandchildren, mother Lucille Tonioli, Tooele, and brothers Kent (Linda) Tonioli, Tooele and David (Shauna) Tonioli, Tooele.
He was preceded in death by his father, Budd Tonioli , his father- and mother-in-law, Ray and Bessie Johansen, his son-in-law Reed Anderson, his sister-in-law Andre Heaton Tonioli, and nephew Scott Tonioli.
