Robert Earl Toyn, 97, successfully accomplished his divinely appointed mission here on earth after a long and productive life, leaving mortality on Friday, January 17, 2025, due to causes incident to his age.
He was born April 22, 1927, to Alma Harry and Myrtle Hart Toyn in Ogden, Utah. He was the fifth of seven children, growing up in Ogden and attending area schools, including Ogden High School.
He was a proud World War II veteran who served in the United States Navy, being called into active duty on January 29, 1945. He was trained as an aircraft mechanic, and a gunner on a P2V Neptune patrol bomber. In the summer of 1945, he was stationed at Pearl Harbor preparing for the invasion of Japan, where officials expected a significant number of American casualties. When the atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan eventually surrendered on August 15, 1945, sparing Bob and potentially a million other Americans. He was honorably discharged on July 20, 1946.
He married Joy Lucille Wood on August 14, 1948, which was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple.
He attended Weber College after the war, and his GI bill paid the required $30 for his tuition, fees, and books. After earning an associate’s degree, he earned a business administration degree from Woodbury University in Los Angeles. He went on to work as a bookkeeper for many years thereafter.
He started to build home in Huntsville in early 1959, completing construction and moving into their home in September 1960. He earned a teaching degree at Weber State University in 1967 and then a Master of Education degree. For 24 years he taught fifth and sixth grades at Valley School in Huntsville. He was known as a stern yet fair teacher, beloved by most of his students. He would frequently receive letters of appreciation from former students who thanked him for teaching many important life lessons.
As they planned for retirement, Bob and Joy invested their retirement savings into starting a nursery business specializing in plants and flowers specifically suited for the climate of the Ogden Valley. After 18 successful years serving their community, they sold the business and moved to Perry in 1998, where they gained many wonderful and dear friends.
Bob and Joy served three missions for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They were among the first missionaries assigned to the Nauvoo Illinois Mission, where they participated in the events leading up to the dedication of the Nauvoo Temple. They also were service missionaries at the Conference Center in Salt Lake City, and later served as office missionaries in the Harrisburg Pennsylvania Mission. He had a powerful testimony of Jesus Christ and His restored church and enjoyed bearing his testimony often.
Bob also devoted much of his time and efforts toward the gathering of Israel and serving in the temple. He completed over two thousand temple ordinances on behalf of his ancestors.
Bob enjoyed woodworking and created many incredible items of furniture and other hardwood pieces for his family and grandchildren.
Bob is survived by his children, Diane (Brad) Nelson of Huntsville, Rob (Marci) Toyn of North Ogden, Kevin (Janice) Toyn of Brigham City, Lynette Williams of Layton, and Gary (Danita) Toyn of Clinton; and his 21 grandchildren, 49 great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Joy; his daughter, Deborah Joy; his grandsons, Curtis Ryland and Trevour Toyn; his parents and siblings.
