Robert Leon Vogel
May 22, 1930 ~ August 27, 2011
Bob passed away at McKay-Dee Hospital Saturday, August 27, 2011 surrounded by his family after a valiant battle with asthma.
He was born on May 22, 1930 in Indianapolis, Indiana. His early years were spent in an orphanage and several foster homes. He later took a bus to Arizona to find work, but at age 19, he went to live in Oregon where his path crossed with George Vogel Jr. of Ogden, who was serving an LDS mission. After joining the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he went to Salt Lake City to work and was soon able to meet George''s family in Ogden and George''s sister, Carla. A few months later Uncle Sam called. He came to Ogden from basic training before going to the Korean War and that is when he was adopted by Dr. and Mrs. George Vogel. He was stationed in Pusan, So. Korea where he and two other fellow soldiers were able to bring a group of Koreans into the Church which then became the first LDS branch in Korea.
After he came home, he and Carla were married in the Salt Lake Temple on May 15, 1953. After working in retail for several years in Salt Lake City, they moved back to Ogden and graduated from Weber State and later added his Master''s Degree from Utah State University.
Bob started his teaching career at Polk Elementary, then Pingree Elementary and then the old Washington School. From there he taught at the Ogden High LDS Seminary. He then moved to Baton Rouge, LA where he taught at the LDS Institute of Religion. After six years they went to Price, Utah and he taught at the Institute there. After retiring they moved back to Ogden.
He was privileged to teach and influence many people over the years. Some of his LDS Church callings were in Bishoprics, Stake High Council and in the Mission Presidency in Louisiana.
He is survived by his wife, Carla and five sons, David (Carol), Ron (Lorilyn), Jim (Joan), George (Peggy) and John (Clarissa), 22 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Preceded in death by Dr. George B. Vogel his brother.
