Captain Robert D. Wood, USN, (Ret.)
PLEASANT VIEW a" Captain Robert Dale Wood, USN, (Ret.) passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 19, 2011 at the age of 88 surrounded by his family.
He is survived by his daughter, Sandra Bilger-Potter of Pleasant View, UT; his son, Douglas Robert Wood of Homosassa, FL; and his grandchildren, Scott Bilger, Kristie Pederson and LTJG Stephanie Dale Wood, USCG. His great-grandchildren include Kash, 4 and Keegan Pederson, 3. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 33 years, Helen Langford and his sister, Doris Wood Broughton.
Captain Bob''s 33-year naval career began in World War II as an enlisted man then immediately following attended and graduated with a metallurgical engineering degree from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and thereafter was commissioned as a U.S. Naval Officer. His education included an MBA and Masters in Education. He spoke four languages including fluent German, some Spanish, Chinese and Japanese. He was the commanding officer of six different class ships, the highlights of his career. His various shore duties included being the Naval AttachAC. to Germany at the U.S. Embassy in Bonn and the commanding officer of Headquarters Support Activity located in Taipei, Taiwan.
He was a world traveler, officer and gentleman, loved by all who knew him. He was known for his gregarious personality that made him a joy to be around. He will be dearly missed.
A private burial at sea will be held by his family off the coast of Florida.
Donations may be made to Hospice for Utah in Ogden.
