Roger B. Felt, D.D.S.

1922 – 2017

Layton, UT—Roger B. Felt, D.D.S. died peacefully in his home surrounded by family on July 8, 2017 at the age of 94.  He was a good, kind, and gentle man.  His quiet dignity, steadfast faith, and generosity of spirit will be remembered by all.

Roger was born November 27, 1922 in Dividend, Utah, a small mining community (now ghost town). His mother taught him and his identical twin brother Rodney to play baseball.  Later, they played for the semi-professional Tintic Standard Industrial League Team with Rodney at first and Roger at short stop.  A visiting scout called them up for spring training with the Cincinnati Reds—that was before World War II ended their baseball careers.

Roger met his wife of 74+ years, Lois Geraldine Clark Felt, at Payson High School in 1940 and married her in the Manti Temple on October 9, 1942. It has been a happy union.  Roger enlisted in the Navy and left for basic training two months after the wedding.  He was among the first RADAR technicians.

Roger studied at University of Utah and Brigham Young University before the War and Utah State University and Southern Utah State College after.  He opened a dental laboratory in Cedar City, operating it for six years before acceptance into the University of Missouri School of Dentistry at Kansas City.  He graduated with a DDS, with 6 children, at the age of 38.

Dr. Felt was the oldest practicing dentist in Utah retiring last year at the age of 93.  Roger developed innovative ways to improve denture function and lectured widely in the US and Japan on his techniques. He invented and patented the “Dr. Felt” series of hand instruments for placing filling composites, which are now in general use in dental schools and offices worldwide.

Roger joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 19 remaining faithful all of his life.  He served as Bishop of the Layton 4th Ward from 1968 to 1973.  Each of his seven sons served missions.

Roger joined the Boy Scouts of America in 1933 and remained active throughout his life.  He attended the first National Jamboree in 1935 on the National Mall in Washington DC, served as Scout Master in his late 50’s, as a merit badge counselor into his 90’s, receiving the Silver Beaver Award for distinguished service.

Roger is preceded in death by his twin brother Rodney, his sister Afton “Sis”, sons David and Brian, and grandson Adam.

He is survived by his wife Geraldine Clark Felt, sister Virginia Moore, and 114 descendants, including daughter Renetta West;  and sons Harlan (Sandra), Rodney (Kerrie), Jonathan (Melody), Eric (Joyce), and Jared (Lisa); 51 grandchildren; and 52 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at Saturday, July 15, 2017, at 11 AM at Layton Creekside Stake Center, 1480 Phillips St (entrance on Flint St), in Kaysville.  Friends may call on the family on Friday, July 14, 2017 from 6:00-8:00 PM at Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary, 1867 N Fairfield Rd, Layton, and Saturday, from 9:30-10:30 AM at the stake center.  Interment, Kaysville City Cemetery, 500 East Crestwood Rd, Kaysville.
