“A Life Well Lived”
Roland Martin Hummel, 98, passed away peacefully at his home with his loving son, Robert and daughter-in-law caring for him. Roland was born on July 7, 1923 in Esslingen, Germany. He then served in the German Army as a Corporal with the 23 German Panzer Division. Roland married the love of his life, Frieda Rosa Stoll in May 1950 in Wolfschlugen, Germany. They immigrated to the United States in 1957 and resided in the Ogden area. He was a member of the Elim Lutheran Church.
Roland worked as a custodian and engineer at Ogden High School for 25 years until he retired. He made many lifelong friends during his time at Ogden High School. Roland loved to ski and shared this passion with his sons. He was a loving grandfather and enjoyed spending time with his family. Roland also loved traveling with his family and friends.
Roland is survived by his beautiful wife, Frieda Rosa Hummel; and his son, Robert John (Tina) Hummel of Farr West; two grandchildren, Jamie (Richard) Empey and Ryan Hummel; a great-grandchild, Kristian Empey; and many nieces and nephews. Roland was a family man, and he took pride in all he was able to accomplish in the land of the free. He was preceded in death by his son, Reiner; his parents, Martin and Anna Hummel; sister, Inge Lang and brother-in-law, Heinz Lang; brother-in-law and sister-in law, Rand and Anna Rose (Stoll) Willie.
Roland had a great sense of humor and enjoyed socializing and talking to his nieces and nephew about many places in Germany. During the visits, he would take out his map of and happily provide stories and education of his beloved Deutschland, villages, culture, and cuisine. Christmas was rich in German tradition, and we all enjoyed chocolates, pastries and delicious German wines.
“A life well lived” represents a life filled with happiness and achievement and spirituality over time. Roland lived a life he was proud of and lived by his standards and expectations. He dared to dream with a blend of optimism, curiosity, and wisdom.
Roland will be greatly missed by all. Ruhe in Frieden. Wir alle lieben dich. Prost!
The family would like to thank Canyon Home Care & Hospice for making Roland’s last few days more comfortable; and a special thank you, to Anna Valdez Willie.
