Russell C. Kimble
OGDEN – Russell C. Kimble, was the third of five sons born to Harley and Mable Breese Kimble in Burlington, Colorado on May 10, 1927.
Russ worked long and hard all of life. When his father became ill after the two older boys had joined the Military, Russ quit school at about the age of 12 to take odd jobs to help support his Mom and two younger brothers. The remainder of Russ’s education was on the job training and, as he said, from the School of Hard Knocks.
Within months of their meeting, Russ and Aimee L. Kelley married on November 30, 1946. Their first daughter, Kathy, was born a year later.
In his early years, Russ worked at several trades and eventually served with the U.S. Navy in Port Hueneme, California. The Navy later transferred him to assignments in Japan and Korea where he learned construction trades. Following his military service, Russ and Aimee moved to Sunol, Nebraska where they began a construction and masonry contractors business. The business and family grew with the 1952 birth of son, Rusty, and daughter Jody in 1954. A few years later the family moved to Ogden where he continued work as a masonry contractor.
In the 1970’s, Russ became an officer of the Bricklayers and Hod Carriers Union in Ogden. He was a proud and dedicated union man. But the position he seemed to enjoy most was being a trainer at the Job Corps in Weber Canyon where he taught young people his masonry skills. He referred to his students as “The Kids” and was proud of every one of them for overcoming adversity, much as he had.
After his wife Aimee died in 1989, Russ married his former sister-in-law, Billie Cottner Kimble, on October 6, 2000. Their marriage revitalized Russ as he and Billie greatly enjoyed each other’s company. Gradually dementia and Alzheimer’s took its toll on Russ and after a brief stay in a care facility, he died peacefully on Sunday, March 22, 2009.
Russ will be greatly missed will be remembered with love and laughter.
He is survived by his wife, Billie, daughter Kathy “Kat” (Larry) Sherwood, Tualatin, OR; son Rusty (Deann) Sidney, NE; and daughter, Jody (Paul) Mayville, Salt Lake City; as well as 10 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.
Thanks go out to all those people who made Russ’s final days comfortable.
