Ruth Ann Scarlet Achter

1929 ~ 2021

It is with great sadness we announce the loss of our beloved wife, mother and grandmother Ruth Ann Scarlet Achter on Thursday July 1, 2021, in Layton, Utah, just two weeks before her 92nd birthday. She was born July 16, 1929 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Lawrence Scarlet and Clara Ann Richards Scarlet.

The youngest child and only girl in her family. She had four brothers Florentine, Clifford, Ralph, and Don, and one best friend who she would refer to as her sister (Norma Jarvis). They all preceded her in death.

She married the love of her life K Achter March 30, 1950 in the Salt Lake Temple. She is survived by her five children, Marie (Jeff) Lawson, Paula Achter, Howard (Melissa) Achter, Mark (Monica) Achter and Daniel “Dan” (Tammy) Achter, 17 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

She was a life-long faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints where she served in Relief Society, Primary presidencies, and helped ward members with their food storage for many years. She also served for many years as a docent at the Church History Museum. She served as a 4H leader with the neighborhood girls and in cub scouting with her boys for several years.

Graduating from the University of Utah with her degree in education, she taught elementary school for a number of years and started her own business as an electrologist after all her children were in school. She formed the Utah Guild of Professional Electrologists and served as president for many years.

Ruth loved to square dance with K and the two danced several times a week for decades. She enjoyed water and snow skiing and skied with K into her eighties.

She was truly a wonderful woman with love and compassion for everyone. She always wore a smile and would brighten anyone’s day with her quick humor and stories of her youth.

She was a loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother and great-grandmother. Family was the most important treasure in her life. Ruth was always a gracious host to have family and friends over to her home for any occasion. She was an avid journal keeper and wrote in her journals almost daily, there are many volumes for her posterity to remember her by.

She is a medical miracle having survived symptoms of Alzheimer’s for many years. She prayed for two things upon her official diagnosis. One to never forget God and her testimony and the other to never forget K her wonderful husband of 71 years. These two gifts kept her happily thriving all those years.

There is an amazing reunion going on right now in heaven with her parents and all her siblings that have passed before her along with a granddaughter (Shaylee Achter) that passed away just a few short months ago.

She will be missed by everyone who knew and loved her.
