Sally Petroff Chen passed away peacefully on January 9, 2025, at her home in West Point, Utah.
Sally was born on January 24, 1949, in Denver, Colorado, to John and Betty Petroff. She spent her formative years in Denver before moving to Upstate New York, where she began her own family after marrying Dr. Jung-Wen Chen in 1971. The couple briefly lived in Ohio for Dr. Chen’s residency, during which they welcomed their first son, David. They later settled in Scotia, New York, where they were blessed with a second son, Matthew.
Her unwavering commitment to family shaped her life’s journey, taking her from Colorado to New York, Ohio, Missouri, and Utah. Whether caring for a loved one or supporting those around her, Sally formed meaningful connections everywhere she lived. In New York, Sally was the neighborhood’s mom. She always welcomed packs of kids for water polo, basketball games and watching sports. Sally didn’t just provide snacks; she listened and was there for everyone too. When David had set out on his own, Sally moved to Joplin, Missouri to care for her mother in her final years. Her next move brought her to Utah to be close to her father, brother and more family. Fondly nicknamed “Sergeant Sally,” she gained a reputation for guiding her nephews, nieces, and others with her stern yet compassionate approach. Sally left an indelible mark wherever she called home, offering guidance and unconditional support.
Sally was an avid reader and a dedicated fan of Barry Manilow, traveling across the country to attend his concerts. Her creative spirit shone through her love of crafting, which evolved from ceramics and knitting to quilting and, eventually, creating stunning bead and crystal designs. Her passion for the arts was matched only by the enduring friendships she built within these communities.
Being a grandmother was Sally’s greatest joy. She lovingly sent her famous cookies, a sweet gesture that always reminded them of her love; played board games during visits; and cheered on her grandchildren in every sport they played. She often bragged about them to anyone who would listen, proudly sharing their accomplishments and talents. Her pride in them was evident, and she poured her heart into making sure they felt her encouragement and love even from afar.
Sally is survived by her brother, John Petroff, and his wife, Pam; her sister, Michelle Ringleman, and her husband, Ed; her son, David, and his father, Dr. Jung-Wen Chen; her daughter-in-law, Mia Victoria; and her cherished grandchildren, Griffin, Trevor, Xander, and Veronika. She will also be deeply missed by her nieces and nephews—Kim, Mike, Nikki, Nick, and Allie—and their families.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Betty; her son, Matthew; and her stepparents, Beatrice Petroff and James Parker.
