Samuel Smith Isom; our loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, brother, and friend; passed away peacefully at his home in Layton, Utah on Wednesday morning, August 16th, 2017.
Born November 6th, 1931 to Alma Isom and Cleone Smith Isom in Salt Lake City. He graduated from Norborne High School in Torrance, California. He attended BYU until he was drafted in the Air Force. He was married to his sweetheart, Margene Ware for 65 years. They were married on June 27th, 1952 in the St. George Temple. Together they had five loving children: Michael, Cynthia, Jeffery, Bradford, and Kathleen.
In 28 years in the Air Force they were stationed in South Korea, Okinawa, Japan, Thailand, Texas, Kentucky, Virginia, California, Oklahoma, and finally settled in Layton, Utah.
Being the oldest great-grandson of Hyrum G. Smith, the past patriarch of the LDS Church, he served faithfully his entire life. During his years of service to the church he held the offices of: Scout Master for 15 years, High Priest Group Leader, Branch President, and many others.
In the military, Samuel, was a mechanic for airplanes and helicopters; at home, he worked on cars and supported his wife’s career by delivering voting booths for 12 years. His hobbies included fishing, camping, hunting, gardening, and sharing beloved poems with his family. He was devoted to his heritage, and spent many hours researching, and recording his family history.
Samuel Smith Isom was preceded in death by his brother Robert S. Isom, his granddaughter Wendy Saunders Fisher, and his grandson Benjamin Denis Lyman. He is survived by his wife Margene; his children, Mike (Joan), Cyndi Saunders, Jeff, Brad (Phyllis), Kathleen (Richard) Watson; his siblings, Martha Whitehead, James (Diana), Gilbert (Rosemary), Lynn Isom, 22 grandchildren and 53 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August 23, 2017 at 11 a.m. at Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary, 1867 No. Fairfield Road. Friends may visit family Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Wednesday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the mortuary. Interment, Kaysville City Cemetery.
