Samuel James "Jim" Maybury

October 1, 1924 ~ May 30, 2019

Samuel James "Jim" Maybury, 94, slipped peacefully through the veil Thursday, May 30, 2019 at his home in Layton, Utah of causes incident to age.

James was born October 1, 1924 to Charles Abraham Maybury and Alice Ann Gratton in Sheffield, Yorkshire, England in the Village of Woodhouse, where he attended public schools.

He Married his childhood sweetheart Doreen Bellamy on September 14, 1946. They immigrated to the United States in 1948 where their marriage was solemnized June 9, 1948 in the Idaho Falls, Idaho temple.

Mom and Dad adored their native England and immigrating to the United States was a daunting endeavor that required much sacrifice and exacted a toll, the magnitude of which we as children don’t fully understand, but for which we are grateful beyond expression.  They raised their five children as proud citizens of the U S a and remained here the remainder of their lives.

James and Doreen instilled a love of England in all of us kids and we were the beneficiaries of many happy traditions and the beholders of a myriad of fascinating, enthralling stories ranging from Dad’s escapades on his bicycle to their harrowing tales of the horrors of being teenagers during the WWII bombings of their towns and villages.

James was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and held many callings, his favorite being Gospel Doctrine Instructor. He poured his heart into this calling and was beloved of many for his dedication and love. He was an outstanding orator and was well known for his moving  talks and speeches in a variety of meetings ranging from the secular to the spiritual. He was a master reader and writer of poetry and could captivate his audience with his spellbinding style. We will greatly miss his poems.

In England he apprenticed as a coach-builder, working on everything from tram cars to double-decker buses. He achieved the status of master craftsmen in this trade and leaving it behind was one of the greatest sadness of his life.  He spent his career in the US as a management analyst at Hill Air Force Base and at Weber State College as a Facility Maintenance Supervisor. While at Weber State he was elected to serve as president of the Utah Public Employees Association. He served proudly, and skillfully represented it’s members, advancing their interests and attaining for them greatly improved salaries and benefits.

One of the greatest joys that Mom and Dad experienced occurred in 1984 when they returned to their beloved England after a 36 year absence. They had the immense pleasure of making several return trips in subsequent years and the indescribable joy of rekindling former family relationships and forging new ones with their related posterity. It provided them with a longed for fulfillment, and was indeed cathartic in the best of ways.

After Mom died in 2006, Dad was lonely and distraught. Happily, in 2009 he married a long time friend,  Loueen Nutt. They gave each other much needed companionship and brought happiness into one another’s lives. As Dad’s health declined, the care he required was too much for Loueen whose own health was fragile. Dad was moved into a care facility and He and Loueen eventually divorced, but parted friends and bore no ill feelings for one another. We kids are grateful Loueen was in his life and express our gratitude for the tremendous effort she expended caring for him.

Our Dad will live in our hearts forever and we will always cherish our happy memories with him, wether it be his playing the bones, making us laugh with his funny “false teeth face” , or just simply sitting and chatting in his easy English style. We love you Dad.

He was preceded in death by his beloved Doreen, his parents,  three siblings, a granddaughter, Kara Urry, a daughter-in-law, Coleen Maybury, a Grandson-in-law, Mark Churchill, a great-granddaughter Bella Gardiner and a great-granddaughter, Ester Rose Davis.

He is survived by 31 great-grandchildren, 16 grandchildren, and  his five children; James, Mesquite, NV; Yvonne Marshall (David), West Jordan, Utah; Donna Roane (Cary), Clinton, Ut; Jean Hill (Tracy), Roy, Ut; David (Linda), Clearfield, Ut.

We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the staff at Fairfield Village assisted living and Encompass Home Health and hospice for their care of our Dad.
