Samuel David Riter
SOUTH OGDEN a" Samuel David Riter passed away at his home on January 29, 2013 from complications of a stroke. He was born May 15, 1938 to Dr. Kersey Clyde and Ruth Ann Budge Riter in Logan, Utah. He was the grandson of Dr. D.C. Budge, founder of the William Budge Memorial Hospital and Retta Bowen Budge.
He graduated from East High School in 1957.
Sam married Mary Alyce Gordon on July 31, 1959 in the Logan LDS Temple.
He was honorably discharged from the United States Army in 1964,
Sam graduated from Utah State University with a Bachelor of Science, on June 7, 1969. He later completed a Masters Degree of Industrial Arts on June 3, 1978.
He taught in the Granite School District, in Industrial Arts, Mathematics, Auto Mechanics and small engine repair. He also taught night school in the adult education program for several years. His professional teaching career spanned 30 years.
After retirement, he worked for Iomega and then for Rise Inc. providing support for adults with disabilities. Sam particularly enjoyed working with Bruce Hagen. He was working so long as he was able.
He was an excellent boogie woogie/blues piano player although he disliked lessons as a boy. He was very enthusiastic about "big band" era and jazz music. His other interests over the years included H/O scale trains. He had a peculiar drive for tinkering and building. He played several varieties of keyboards. He was very attached to the family dogs many of which were Boston Terriers.
Sam is survived by his wife of 53 years, Mary Alyce Riter, South Ogden; son, Michael Kersey Riter, Brigham City; daughter, Shelley Lea Riter (David) Daily, Washington Terrace; son, Samuel Marc (Teresa Toone) Riter, Harrisville; and son, Matthew Randolph (Sara Malan) Riter, Roy; and ten grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sons Robert and Todd Riter.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 2, 2013 at 10 a.m. at the South Ogden 7th Ward, 720 Nancy Dr. Friends may visit with family on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist''s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd. and Saturday from 8:45 to 9:45 a.m. at the church. Interment, Logan City Cemetery at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
The family wishes to express sincere appreciation to the staff at Manor Care, and especially Brandon La Rogue, for their dedication to Sam. Many thanks also to CNS and their staff of hospice caretakers.
