Samuel Paul Thompson beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and great-great-grandfather passed away gracefully surrounded by his family. He returned to his Heavenly Father on Thursday, September 12, 2013, he was 97 years old.
Dad was born in Ashland, Kentucky on February 23, 1916 to Benjamin F. and Augie Thompson.
In 1927, his family relocated to Provo where he graduated from Provo High School. There, he was captain of the football and basketball teams. He gave up an athletic scholarship to BYU to marry the love of his life, Carol Webb. They were married almost 78 years and were blessed with three children. Carol passed away on April 11, 2013.
At this time of their marriage the depression was causing much anguish among the people. Dad told stories of people walking the streets begging for food. Many people/farmers would trade things for food. Dad newly married couldn''t find a job so to get experience he volunteered himself at a local grocery store. At the end of the week the owner hired Dad and even paid him the volunteered week.
During their early years they got interested in racing and breeding thoroughbred horses. It was during this time traveling throughout the U.S. that many of their lifelong friendships were made.
He retired after 38 years of service as an engineer for the Southern Pacific Railroad. He had an insatiable appetite for learning. He was always found with a book by his side.
The Utah Jazz and BYU were his favorite among many sports teams to watch.
