Sandra “Jolene” Jones passed away on August 11, 2024, at the age of 82, after living a full and beautiful life. Jolene “Jo” was born on August 4, 1942, in Ogden Utah to Elmer C. Nielson and Gladys Francom. She was the youngest of seven children and loved all her siblings but had an especially strong bond with her sisters. She grew up in Clearfield and graduated from Davis High School in 1960. She is an alumnus of Davis High School and proud to be a Davis Dart. She excelled in the social activities in school, maybe a bit more than the structured academics. She talked for years about her days on the Pro-Scola pep club and even most recently could recite the words to the “Davis School Song.” Following her graduation, she briefly attended Utah State before marrying fellow classmate Michael Roundy. From this union were her two sons Scott and Mark. In 1969, she met an Airforce Airman named Charley Jones and their courtship endured the challenges during Charley’s deployment to Vietnam. One of her greatest blessings was the addition of Charley’s son Michael, with whom she proudly raised as her own son. One of her favorite stories was when Charley proposed to her via a letter, she bought her own ring, asked herself to marry, and officially became engaged. Upon Charley’s safe return home from Vietnam, they were married on July 18, 1971, in Elko Nevada. They spent the next 45 years together until his passing in 2016. From this union they added their baby girl Charlene to their family.
Jo retired from Convergys (formerly NICE Corp), after working for many years as their payroll processor. She enjoyed watching Utah Jazz games and playing cards with her grandchildren. She learned to oil paint and created several beautiful pieces, until Parkinson’s made it difficult to hold her paint brush. She loved lunch dates with friends, chocolate, babies, and her beloved little dogs. She also enjoyed traveling to new places and was able to take several cruises to Alaska, Caribbean, and just last year a “girls' trip” to Mexico. But her favorite activity was being with her family and especially with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren who affectionately called her GG. Rarely did you leave her home without her telling you “remember who you are and what you stand for.” Jo left us a legacy of loving unconditionally and showing us her example of service, and enduring “hard things.”
Jo was fortunate to have many special friends, but most recently she was blessed to have Trudy Davis and Bailey Pollock, who helped her get out and enjoy some fun lunch and shopping dates. She loved them like daughters, and they were the beneficiaries of Jo’s fun personality and unlimited advice.
20 months ago, she moved into the Sunridge Assisted Living Facility in Roy. Leaving her beautiful home was a difficult transition, but she embraced this new phase of her life with courage and determination. She quickly made friends and soon became one of the favorite residents and was voted as the “Community Comedian.” She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and spent her life participating in Relief Society activities in her Roy 12th ward, The Rosewood Ward in West Haven, and most recently at the Roy 6th Branch. She loved her Savior and yearned to be reunited with her departed loved ones, especially Charley and Charlene.
Jo is survived by her sons: Mike Jones of Roy, Mark Roundy (Becky) of West Haven, and Scott Roundy (Angie) of Ogden. She is survived by ten grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren, and more friends than we could count. She is also survived by sisters-in-law Debbie Nielson, and Renee Hinckley. She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Carol Burr, Gene Wells, and Peggy Barker; her brothers Reed, Lyle and Karl Neilson. Her husband Charley and her beloved daughter Charlene Jones Lloyd who preceded her in death in 2010.
The family would like to express their appreciation and gratitude to the staff of Sunridge Assisted Living in Roy and their amazing caregivers that treated Jo like family. We also appreciate the branch members and leaders of the Roy 6th Branch for their dedication and love shown to Jo during the past 20 months.
