Sandra Lay

KAYSVILLE - Sandra McConkie Fisher Lay passed away Friday, February 7, 2014 in Kaysville, UT. Sandy, as she was often called, was born May 2, 1944, in Heber City, UT, the third of five children to Andrew Ray McConkie and Beatrice Stephenson.

Sandra attended schools in Heber City, UT, Kemmerer, WY, and Vernal, UT, where she graduated from Uintah High School in 1962. She attended one year at BYU and later completed her degree as a registered nurse from Weber State in 1979. She retired after 20 years of managing the endoscopy lab at the Dixie Regional Medical Center in St. George, UT.

Sandra married Merrill William Fisher in the Salt Lake Utah Temple in 1963; their union brought four surviving children, Senna Yoakam, Neil Fisher, Merilee Fisher, and Matthew Fisher. She and Merrill were divorced in 1982. Sandra married Leland Harvey Lay in 1986 and the two were sealed in the St. George, Utah Temple in 1988. Sandra enlarged her family with Harvey’s seven children: Joseph Lay, Tracy Lay, Taylor Lay, Tonya Rodgers, Trisha Prisbrey, Tobin Lay, and Trenton Lay; all of whom she loved and influenced. She and Harvey were divorced in 2013.

She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in various callings including: den mother, primary teacher, Young Women president and adviser, and Relief Society president. Sandra served a full-time mission from 2009-2010 as head nurse of the Family and Church History Mission at Temple Square in Salt Lake City, UT.

Sandra has left a legacy of service to her family and fellowmen, enriching the lives of all those with whom she came into contact. Never idle, she welcomed all to join in her work projects. She loved family gatherings and held them often, including others who didn't have the blessings of a large family. She loved working in her garden, being outdoors and in the mountains, and the cabin she and Harvey had built to share time with loved ones.

She put up a valiant fight with ovarian cancer the last two years of her life. Although there were times that were difficult, her positive attitude and expressed love and concern for others never diminished. Her last months were spent in Kaysville, UT, under the care of her sister Sarah, friend since childhood William "Bid" Harris and hospice nurse Michelle Carpener.

Sandra is survived by her sister Sarah Harris, brother Alan McConkie, four children, seven stepchildren, thirty-seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents, brothers Stephen and Roy McConkie and sons Steven and Michael Fisher.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, February 12, 2014, at 2:00 p.m. at the Holden, UT, LDS Meetinghouse located at 100 N. 110 E. Friends may visit family from 12:00 to 1:30 p.m. prior to services. Interment, Holden City Cemetery.
