Our beloved wife, nurturing mother, supportive grandmother and devoted sister, passed away January 19, 2024. Surrounded by her family at her home in Layton. She was born May 31, 1951, to Manuel and Soraida Lopez in Rio Arriba New Mexico. Sandra moved to Clearfield, Utah, as a young child with her family. The oldest of five children. Mary, Roger, Mike and Soraida and later on her father had two more children, Lori and Tony.
Sandra attended schools in Davis County. She graduated from Clearfield High School.
Sandra married her high school sweetheart Helmut “Bud” Walter Hopton. They later divorced but remained best friends. Sandra and Bud had three children together. Tonya Hopton, Jamie Hopton Perkins and Lance Hopton.
Sandra later married her love Joe Valerio on March 31 1990 and became a stepmother to Joes daughter Sandra Valerio.
Sandra loved running, biking, hot tubing and swimming. Camping with family and friends. Going on trips especially traveling to New Mexico to visit her family.
Sandra’s favorite pastime was shopping. She could spend hours at one store looking through the racks to find that perfect outfit for any special occasion. She enjoyed getting her eyebrows, hair and nails done by her longtime friend Marnie.
Sandra looked forward to attending sporting events and competitions: football, basketball and track meets to support her grandsons. She supported her granddaughter Ciera at every dance recital and drill competition (rain or shine) home or away she sat front and center for long hours with a smile on her face cheering her on.
Sandra always found a way to stay positive and happy amidst moments of hardship, especially toward the end of her days. She found support and comfort from her many fur babies. “Sandias” livacious personality, infectious laugh, heartwarming smile, root beer eyes, words of encouragement and wisdom. Will leave an indelible mark to all who knew and loved her.
Sandra is survived by husband of 39 years, Joe Valerio; children, Tonya Hopton, Jamie (Kevin) Perkins, Lance Hopton and Sandra (Doug) Fuller; grandchildren, Zachary Liptrap, Patrick Guillen, Aubrey Guillen, Dezmond (Kaitlyn) Perkins, Danuel (Kailee) Perkins, Ciera Perkins, Alex Smith, Shelby Smith, and Savanna Smith; 12 great-grandchildren; brother, Mike Lopez; sister, Soraida (Ruben) Curls; many nephews and nieces; and her precious fur baby, Spunky.
