Sarah Allred passed away peacefully on August 16, 2019 at the age of 94 years old. Sarah was born on January 6, 1925 in Ogden, Utah to Charles Ephraim and Alta Shurtliff Tillotson.
Sarah spent her growing up years with her three sisters, Ruth, Margaret, and Charlotte, living in several different homes, including Ogden, a family farm in Brigham City, and one year in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
In college, Sarah started out in pre-med and then switched to an art major. She attended school at both the University of Utah and Utah State University. It was while attending school in Logan that she met Hugh Bruce Allred, who had recently returned from serving in the US Navy. They were married on September 5, 1947 in the Logan Temple.
Over the next 15 years, Sarah and Hugh were blessed with nine children. While raising their children they moved several times, living in Pocatello, Blackfoot, and Boise, Idaho; Denver, Colorado; Salt Lake City, Bountiful (20 years), and Layton (40 years), in Utah.
For Sarah, her family was always her top priority and she taught her children to work hard and enjoy life. She encouraged education and music- all her children learned to play at least one musical instrument. The family enjoyed many vacations together, including camping trips to Southern Utah and Bear Lake, Idaho.
Sarah loved to learn. She returned to school to finish a master’s degree and went on to teach art at Bountiful High School. Sarah saw the beauty in everything around her. She was a wonderful artist. She used her creativity to enhance her home and family life. She also loved to garden and be outdoors.
After Hugh retired they fulfilled a lifetime dream when they moved to West Layton and bought a small farm. She immersed herself in every aspect of life on the farm. This became a wonderful gathering place for her family through the years and she loved it.
Sarah was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and served there throughout her life. She once said, “the greatest highlight of my life was serving a full-time Spanish speaking mission with my husband to Honduras and Belize in 1986.”
Sarah is preceded in death by her husband Hugh and her daughter Alta Gae. She is survived by eight children: Ann Schulz, Emily (Jim) Brown, Jolene (Steve) Hoge, Arnon (Holly), Daren (Margo), Charlotte (Brian) Gillespie, Loren, David (Christie), her sister, Charlotte Burgoyne, thirty-one grandchildren, eighty-six great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.
Sarah’s family would like to extend a special thanks to all those who loved and cared for her at Apple Village Assisted Living, Fairfield Village Memory Care and Inspiration Hospice.
