Sarah Lillian Howard Cheney

Sarah Lillian Howard Cheney, 95, formerly of Kaysville, graduated with High Honors from this earthly life on April 6, 2014 at Apple Village Assisted Living in East Layton, Utah.

Sarah was born February 15, 1919 at the family home in Woods Cross, Utah, to David Edward and Lillian Georgina Hatch Howard.  She graduated from Davis High School in 1937 after which she worked at the Presiding Bishop’s Office until she left to served and LDS mission in the Central Atlantic States from 1940-1941.  It was here she met a handsome elder from Idaho, Wendell Blackburn Cheney.  They were married on March 1, 1946 in the Salt Lake Temple after Wendell completed his military service in WWII.

Four children were born to them, but over the years they also cared for seven foster children and many other “borrowed” children.  Sarah spent her life emulating the love of the Savior to her family and everyone around her.  She served in many capacities in the LDS Church including twice as Relief Society President.  She and Wendell served two missions together including: Tulsa, Oklahoma from 1977-1979 and the Church Locator’s Office.  They also served in the Ogden Temple.

Sarah is survived by her children, Howard and Louise Kelly Cheney of Kaysville; Carla and Frank Carter of Syracuse; and Caroljoy Smith of Farmington; 21 grandchildren, 55 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and by her sister, Ila Anderson of Brigham City.  She was preceded in death by her husband, son, David, son-in-law, Dr. Nyle B. Smith, two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Friday, April 11, 2014 at 11 a.m. at Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary, 1867 No. Fairfield Road.  Friends may visit family Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Friday from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. at the mortuary.  Interment, Logan City Cemetery.

The family wishes to express special thanks to all of the staff of Apple Tree Assisted Living, Apple Village Assisted Living and Symbii Hospice, who gave Mom compassionate and loving care.  She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
