Sarah Ellen Jones Doan
1931-2021
Sarah Ellen Jones Doan passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 24, 2021 in Logan, Utah five days short of her 90th birthday as the result of injuries sustained in a fall in her apartment in North, Logan, Utah. Before her passing she had the opportunity to see all of her surviving children and many of her grand children and great grandchildren.
Born June 29, 1931 in rural Lamar County, Mississippi to Alfred Ulman Jones and Azzie Pauline Atwood, Sarah spent her childhood and youth in austere circumstances, her father having passed away when she was eight years old and three of her 11 siblings were still young. She attended a rural elementary school through seventh grade then commuted to Purvis High School six miles away, graduating in 1949.
During three years following her high school graduation, Sarah worked in a garment factory in Hattiesburg, Mississippi then moved to Houston where she found work as a telephone operator. While working in Houston she met Virgil Lee Doan, who was serving in the United States Air Force. Sarah and Virgil were married in Houston on August 1, 1953.
During the first fifteen years of her married life, she and her family moved seven times in response to orders from the Air Force. Their stations included bases in Texas, Mississippi, Puerto Rico, North Dakota, and Louisiana.
During the family's stay in Puerto Rico, Virgil and Sarah were introduced to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by their good friends and bridge partners Ed and Elaine Mann, and they were baptized at the beach on March 8, 1964. From that time forward, faith in the gospel of Jesus Christ and involvement in church activities were central to Virgil's and Sarah's life. Both served in several callings, and they eventually served together as full-time missionaries in the England Leeds Mission and temple workers at the Ogden Utah Temple.
Virgil retired from the military in 1968, and the family remained in the Shreveport, Louisiana area for most of the next 20 years, with a three-year stint in Little Rock, Arkansas. Following their mission to England, Virgil and Sarah settled in Utah, spending several years in Layton before moving to Pioneer Valley Lodge in North Logan. Virgil passed away exactly four years prior to Sarah on June 24, 2017. Sarah is survived by one brother, Russell Jones.
Sarah and Virgil raised six children: Rodney (Suk), Bruce (Chris), Jennifer Daines, deceased (David), Jeffrey (Sabette), Dwight (Kristi) and Amy Bates (Stan). There are 27 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren in Virgil's and Sarah's family.
Sarah excelled as a homemaker. Her cooking was legendary, with special talent for authentic Southern food: fried chicken, pecan pie, spicy chili, and many other recipes. Her children became accustomed to hearing their friends ask, “What are you having for dinner today – can I come?”
Sarah was an able seamstress and made clothes for all her children. She enjoyed playing cards and dominoes and loved putting together jigsaw puzzles. Despite her harsh upbringing, she displayed a quiet and gentle temperament that earned her the sincere affection of family members and friends. With appreciation for the special qualities of her tender character and gratitude for her many years of hard work to raise her family, our family will miss Mom / Grandma dearly, and we will try to support each other as we know she would want us to do.
