Sharon Rich Lewis

April 11, 1929 ~ January 27, 2018

Sharon Rich Lewis, born on April 11, 1929, daughter of Blanche Browning and Junior Edward Rich, passed away of cancer on January 27, 2018, at age 88, at her home. She grew up in Ogden, Utah, attended the University of Utah where she joined the Chi Omega Sorority and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a BA in history in 1952. She married O. Marvin Lewis in the Salt Lake Temple in 1949.

Her first love was always her family, as she supported her busy physician husband, nurtured her six children, and held tight to her dear Rich and Browning relatives. As a young woman, she joined the Junior League of Ogden, where she learned to be an effective volunteer. Family, education, the arts, and her church were the focus of her service, including the Ogden Symphony Ballet Board, Weber State University’s “Families Alive” Board, their Child and Family Studies Advisory Board, and the Children’s School Committee. She served on the President’s Club Committee for the University of Utah, on the Children’s Justice Center Board, and the Child Abuse Prevention Board. She was a founding board member of the Ogden School Foundation and served as its president for five years. She served on the Ogden Arts Council, the Myra Powell Gallery Board, and the Gallery at the Station Board.

Besides community services, she has been active in her church, serving as Relief Society President, as a member of the General Board of the Young Women, and as Weber State College Chapter and then Northern Utah Advisor for Lambda Delta Sigma as well as in presidencies and as a teacher in almost every organization. She loved being “Sister Friendly” in Primary, and served as a Church Service Missionary in the Ogden Utah Stake, Monroe Branch. Everywhere she served she made friends. Some of her dearest friends are members of her beloved Study Group and Ladies Literary.

Sharon has received awards for her service over the years and has always felt that someone made a mistake. But she let her light shine to encourage others to give and serve. She received the “Service to Youth” award from the LDSSA at Weber State (1974), the “Nurturing Hand Award” (1993 and 2008), the “Lewis Shurtliff University Club Award” (1994), an honorary doctorate of humanities degree (2007) from Weber State University, and The Mayor’s Award for the Arts in 2011. Whether it was Ogden High School, the Egyptian Theater or Union Station that needed saving, Sharon was there to help, and to encourage others to contribute to the safety and beauty of the community.

She was preceded in death by her husband, O. Marvin Lewis, and sister, Lynne Rich. She is survived by her two siblings, Edward B. (Lorna Ledingham) Rich and Carolyn Nebeker (Marty) Rasmussen; six children, Shelley (Douglas) Felt, Robin (Brad) Farr, David (Kim Corbin) Lewis, Mark (Susan Holmes) Lewis, Seth (Tonya Christopulos) Lewis, and Julie Lewis (Tane Williams); 22 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
