Shige Shimada
SALT LAKE CITY - Shige Shimada, 88, passed away Thursday, April 9, 2009 of natural causes. Born on September 10, 1920, in Pleasant View, Utah, to Taiji and Tomeyo Kanno Shimada, he graduated from Davis High School in 1938, after which he attended the LDS and Ogden Business Colleges. He married Misuko June Yamada on January 17, 1945, whom he loved and cherished for 64 years.
After high school, Shige worked on the family farm and at Harrisville Brick Yard and P J Steel. Beginning in 1950, he worked at Hill Air Force Base for 16 years, while continuing to farm and attend night classes at Stevens-Henager College. After his career at Hill Air Force Base, he worked at Kmart and Anderson Lumber eventually retiring from farming in 1986. In their farming and gardening, Shige and Misuko earned a reputation of having immaculate and weedless fields.
Shige’s passion was raising and caring for his wife, children and extended family; his enjoyment and compassion growing as he welcomed his daughters-in-law, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Shige is survived by his wife and six sons, Gary (Wendy), Roland (Janice), Alan (Beverly), Lynn (Marilyn), Lannie, and Brent (JoLene), 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Sab (Mae), sister Hanako (Ted) Ando, sister-in-law Noriko, and brother-in-law Sam Yamamoto. He was preceded in death by his brother Kiyoshi, and sister Sharron Yamamoto.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd.
Friends and family may call at the mortuary on Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Monday from 10 to 11 a.m.
The family would like to offer special thanks to Dr. James Wood who, with compassion and care, allowed Shige to live a productive and dignified life for the past 10 years. We would also like to thank Eclipse Home Health and Silverado Hospice for the care they provided to Shige. Finally, Dad’s children would like to thank Mom for demonstrating strength and courage and being Dad’s support.
Husband, Dad, Grandpa and Great-Grandpa…..we love you and you will be missed.
