Shirley Lu Struhs Carver
April 10, 1929 ~ July 2, 2016
Our beautiful mother Shirley Lu Struhs Carver returned to the loving arms of her husband and son Saturday July 2, 2016 surrounded by her cherished family.
Shirley, the oldest of four daughters, was born on April 10, 1929 in Salt Lake City Utah to Harry Herbert and Alice Murdock Struhs. She adored and protected her younger sisters.
Shirley was raised in Green River, Wyoming and Ogden, Utah by loving parents. She graduated from Weber High School where she made lifelong friends whom she cherished all of her life. She was on the debate team where she excelled and won many awards. She was a gifted poet, artist and homemaker and shared her talents freely. She had a quick wit and an endearing sense of humor. She kept those around her laughing and brightened everyone's day. Even in her last days she was the life of the party. She had a kind and loving soul with a keen ability to reach out to those who were sad and lonely. Her life was an example of Christ-like service.
On May 13, 1949 she married the love of her life Marvin Carver in the Salt Lake Temple. They worked hard side by side and had a wonderful life centered around their children and grandchildren. Never has a wife so tenderly cared for her sweetheart as she did for hers as he battled cancer. She is his angel forever and always.
Shirley was a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where she served in many capacities including Relief Society President, Stake and Ward Primary President and Compassionate Service Leader. She was active in her community in Washington Terrace and Hooper. She served in local council, regional and state PTA. She was Mothers March Chairman for the March of Dimes. In 1978 she was elected to the Weber County Board of Education, the first woman in over 50 years. She worked tirelessly to better the lives of the teachers and students she represented.
Shirley is survived by her adoring children, Dianne (Ken) Carter, Fruit Heights, David (Yenny) Carver, Las Vegas, Susan (Dennis) Evans, Fruit Heights, Michael (Janet) Carver, Richmond, Monte (Sandy) Carver, Salt Lake City, Kimberlee (Dave) McCowan, Kaysville, sister Lynda (Rick) Whitesides, Lakewood, Colorado; 34 grandchildren; and 39 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her eternal companion, Marvin; her beloved son, Stephen Curtis; her great-granddaughter, Rebecca Tibbitts; her great-grandson, Wilson Christopher Carter; and her sisters, Carolyn Jones and Joyce Crosby.
Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, July 6, 2016 at 2 p.m. at Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary, 1867 N. Fairfield Rd. Friends may visit with the family on Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the mortuary and on Wednesday from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.
