Shirley Dale Lamar Hughes passed away on December 26, 2024, at her home in Roy, Utah surrounded by loved ones. Shirley was born in Ingomar, Mississippi on January 14, 1935, and was raised in Columbus, Mississippi. She attended school and graduated from Stephen D. Lee High School, where she was a cheerleader. Her mother passed away when she was just 15 but her older sister, Madge, took on a motherly role for her to help her daddy finish raising her.
Shirley was called to serve a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Houston, Texas area. After her mission she traveled to Utah with her missionary companion to live with her own sister Madge and attend BYU. She arrived in Salt Lake City and met her companion's (Dawn Elaine) brother, Byron (Bud). They fell in love quickly, were engaged in a week and married three months later in the Salt Lake Temple. Dad always said he fell in love with her when her first two words to him, in a Southern drawl, were spoken "Hi Bud".
After Byron graduated from the University of Utah they moved to Roy, Utah where he took employment in the Weber School District to teach at Bonneville High School. Shirley graduated from Weber State when the kids were older and taught business at Layton High School for 13 years.
Shirley and Byron raised six beautiful children: Curtis (LeAnne) Hughes, Camille (Jay) Niesen, Leslie (Brian) Beus, Elaine/Laney Karician, Barbara (Bryce) Chapman, and Kalyn (Stace) Garver. They and their families still live close to their parents. She is grandmother to 21 and great grandmother to 23. They are her greatest joy.
Shirley has been an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served a second mission with her husband who served as Mission President in the Leipzig, Germany Mission from the years 2000-2003. Perhaps her most thrilling church calling was these three years serving as mission mother to several hundred young missionaries. Since the mission they have served together in the Ogden Utah Temple for 19 years.
Shirley was blessed with a beautiful soprano voice and was a gifted pianist. She grew up in a musical family. Her parents were often found together with friends and neighbors singing the beautiful gospel songs often sung in the South. During her life in Roy, Shirley sang the leading roles in several musicals in the community: H.M. Pinafore, Carousel, Yeoman of the Guard, and The Music Man. Shirley and Byron often sang together in church services and other occasions.
Shirley was actively engaged in serving others throughout her entire life. In the church she served as teacher or leader in various organizations. She also spent countless years devoted to genealogical and family history work.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents Roy and Mildred Lamar, brother Howard Lamar, and sisters Madge Johnson Eloise Crossley, and grandson, Daniel Beus.
The family would like to thank Annette Wood and the staff at Applegate Hospice for their tender care during Shirley's last days.
